First of all, really nice app. Finally a well thought-out app!
I wonder if it's possible (in the future) to have one feed per widget-window.
For example if I don't want to mix the news from two different sources.
And finally I would love to change the size of the widget to, but of courss
that's not the most important change!
Keep up the good work!

It would be useful if there was some kind of visual clue that the feeds were
updating.
With the 'refresh feeds on open' option enabled, when opening sparserss there
is no clue that something is happening until sparserss gets a response from the
feed, which may take a while on a slow connection.

It would be nice if Sparse RSS told the system (by registering intent filters,
I suppose?) that it handles application/rss+xml and application/atom+xml, so
that I could just click on a link in the browser to add a feed, instead of
having to copy the address.

I would really love to adjust the font size in the feed list (news listing) and
maybe for the actual content itself also. I just find it really large, and
would love to see more at a time on the screen (I find using font size 14 works
well in my other apps).

1. Wait for a feed to be updated.
2. News item comes in on PC news reader (RSSOwl).
3. News does not appear on Sparse rss.
4. More news items come in on RSSOwl. (One per day for several days from my
only feed which puts out one news item per day, five days a week.)
5. Still no new news items on Sparse rss.
6. After several days, all previous news items appear on Sparse rss also.
7. In addition, I do not believe it is putting out an audible alert even though

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expect each news item to appear on Sparse rss about the same time as it
appears on RSSOwl. (See above for what I see instead.)

I think it would be useful, that some Feeds can be excluded from "ALL" Tab, not
from 1st Tab ("Überblick").
Or is a categorization planned, so that all feeds from a single category can be
read in chronological order?
Then the feeds to exclude could be added in a own category.

Hi there :)
It's me again. Thank you for correcting the OPML defect earlier in the latest
version. In this post, I have 2 issues to inform you :)
1.I just come across another thing that could be corrected on the widget. Even
though I am LauncherPro(paid) user with its feature to adjust widget size
myself. The space above and below the RSS list is still rather big and wasted
on the screen.
FYI, I really like your nice RSS icon above each widget and clickable RSS
topics. They are extremely powerful and I use it all the time but I sometimes
get confused when I add many feeds into 1 widget.
2. It would be great if the header of each widget can be defined when we add it
onto the homescreen (maybe after selecting the feeds for that widget?) This can
be treated as a group of feeds and helps me keeping track on the updates. I
have 3-4 SpareRSS widget on my homescreen and they are automatically updated
every 30 minutes :)
That's it for me. Thank you again for your great effort ^.^ These are simple my
feedback and ideas to improve your already good work.
Have a good weekend Stefan :)

please advise me how to make it works. Thank you very much in advance.
BTW, I really like your widget. Very well-designed, powerful and reliable.

Just splitting my other request out from issue 18, and thanks for fixing the
OPML thing!
I'd love to see a way to identify the site that the content originates from in
the full screen view, as I read a lot of news sites, and sometimes would/would
not rather read about a particular topic in the feed from a given site. Also I
just think it would be a nice visual improvement if addressed with an icon...
See this pic:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11834893/shot_revised.png
That's kind of what I'm looking for, preferably the icon, but at least the
parent site URL (both circled in red)
It would look pretty good, and help identify the site at a glance instead of
needing to guess.
Just a thought, thanks for the app!

Hi Stefan,
I was looking for a good replacement for the stock HTC news widget when I
bumped into sparserss. And I must say, I really appreciate your efforts! I
really like it.
Although, there's one thing that would make it even better for me, a larger
widget (or multiple widget styles). The reason I love the stock widget so much
is because it covers all the available rows and fills my whole screen (I got 7
of them to waste on my HTC Desire). Due to the fact that it also displays
images, the stock widget displays pretty much the same amount of info (= number
of entries on screen). sparserss just looks, well, smaller and I don't know
what to fill the unused space with. :)
Bottomline, it'd be totally awesome if there was a larger widget (either by
displaying more entries or by displaying images to fill up the "unused" space).
On a side note, if it's too much effort or if it cannot be done easily, would
increasing "private static final String LIMIT = " limit 7";" in
svn/trunk/src/de/shandschuh/sparserss/widget/SparseRSSAppWidgetProvider.java do
the trick (my knowledge is pretty limited at this moment, kinda new to android
/ java programming)? I so, I guess I could try to build sparserss myself with a
higher value for that var. :)

Eelko Berkenpies

It would be great if sparserss would recognize posts that appear on

1st: Great Work! Keep it up.
No other reader, with direct RSS Loading supports the "ALL" view in
chronological order (Google can do this, but this is not direct loading). I am
searching for this feature for about 6 months+! Thanks for that!
But:
Can you modify -> 1.) The sort should be based on the date of the news, not on
date of downloading. 2.) Can you display the Feed nearby/below the news in
"ALL" view (in a smaller font or what ever).
Smaller fontsize would be nice, but this is discussed in another topic.
Greetings from Vienna

Following are the results of a test I did to see if the feeds were being
updated as I expected them to be:
RSSOwl reader is set up on my PC with four rss feeds, and the update interval
is set to one minute. An audible alert sound plays when each new news item
comes in.
Sparse rss version 0.7.2 is set up on my HTC Droid Incredible (Android 2.2)
with the same four rss feeds and the update interval is also set to one minute.
An audible alert sound is set up to play when each new news item comes in.
(The phone was rebooted after version 0.7.2 was installed.)
In the Sparse rss Overview window, the update time for each feed changes every
minute indicating that an update was attempted. The network connection is
Wi-Fi and the connection is working as indicated by email messages arriving on
my phone from Gmail and the ability to surf the web. The Verizon 3G cell
connection is too weak to be working – zero signal strength bars on my phone.
Within the same general timeframe as each new news item comes in to RSSOwl, I
expect to hear an audible alert from Sparse rss and I expect to see the same
news item appear in Sparse rss.
However, after six new news items over a period of 30 minutes come into RSSOwl,
none of the news items appear in Sparse rss from the automatic update that
appears to be occurring.
Refresh from the overview window does not update the feeds. Refreshing each
individual feed does not update the feeds.
In the Sparse rss Overview window, the update time for each feed stops updating
completely as seen by the update time staying fixed. No further updates can be
done either automatically or manually.
After waiting approximately two hours and then rebooting the phone, an audible
alert sounds and a notification icon appears in the upper left notification
area of the phone. The notification says there are 23 new entries in Sparse
rss.
In comparing the feed lists on RSSOwl and Sparse rss, all news items in each
feed are now identical.
More news items come into RSSOwl. Sparse rss continues to show updates every
minute in the Overview window, but no new news items come in, and the process
repeats itself as detailed above.

Thank you for the update and good work but unfortunately I cannot test it for
you thoroughly. This is because it crashes all almost every single time. This
is what I did.
1. Updated to 0.7Pre
2. Removed old widgets
3. Add new widget but crashes
4. Reboot the phone and tried again by adding "All" tab. (Zte Blade, Eclair,
Orange ROM, ADW.Launcher)
5. It worked this time and I saw little icons in front of the items.
6. Once clicked on the item, got into the list view and crashed badly
afterwards.
7. Reboot did not help as it kept crashing ever since.
Something wrong with the icon retrieval?? It is pretty severe for my case.
Please fix this and I'll try to report it to you.

Sorry, I realize this is an extremely trivial bug, but the all-black
notification icon (in v0.2.9.1 and possibly others) is barely visible on the
black-gray gradient used on the notification bar of devices running HTC sense.
Either a white outline around the bars or a change of colour of the bars would
make it much more visible.
