edu-harmonization's Introduction

Educational Landscape Project

Problem statement

Educational resources are often difficult to find and utilize in the context of research, trial planning, and precision education. This project aims to reveal the landscape of existing resources and platforms, understand requirements for searching and using them, and make recommendations for a CTSA-wide strategic plan for CTSA training and educational resource discovery.

Project description

There is outstanding expertise in mentoring and domain-specific training across the CTSA consortium. Enhancing the discoverability and dissemination of the associated educational and training materials developed across the CTSAs will have an immediate impact on the career development and workforce training capability. CD2H will support improving discoverability, metadata/ontology development, curating and enhancing content. This will also allow coordination with other NCATS efforts, like the Development, Implementation and AssessMent of Novel Training in Domain-based Competencies (DIAMOND) which offers a personalized pathway for training in clinical research and N-Ligthen, a federated platform for education resource sharing. We will also work closely the CLIC EDU lead, CTSAs and associated working groups on identifying and prioritizing other personalized pathways to this resource.

Key focus areas:

  1. Development of intitial proposal of Minimal Information about Educational Resources (MIER) for light-weight curation (based on N-lighten ontology) for community review and refinement
  2. Support for and extension of the N-Lighten Ontology

Alignment to program objectives

FOA.5: Stimulate the use of cutting edge biomedical research informatics by providing data science education for CTSA Program researchers. Disseminate educational informatics resources and other products and provide a forum that will provide an assessment of the value of these products. Disseminate high-quality educational resources and materials (e.g. Massive Open Online Courses or MOOCs), including workshops, externship offerings, conferences and courses.

edu-harmonization's Issues

Curate initial round of CTSA "gems" as examples to assess metadata/ontology

Curation of CTSA "gems" from each CTSA will help improve engagement, will support requirements analysis for the ontologies, search and attribution, assist in development of more refined evaluation metrics and will ultimately make some of the most valuable resources more discoverable.
Steps:
A. Community outreach to assist in landscape analysis
B. Initial Exemplar “jewels” requested / socializing of idea of CTSA jewels
C. . Assessment of educational resources with respect to metadata, discovery and ease of re-use

Perform requirements for embedding edu search tools into CTSA hub sites

We want discovery mechanisms into local hub websites etc that allow search of their own as well as filterable network level resources. This is focused on educational resources in this instance but is part of larger CD2H initiative re resource discovery (Lead CD2H wide is @eichmann - coordinated with him and rest of that team).

Design strategic plan

Strategic plan focused on landscape analysis of CTSA investments (nationally and locally) with respect to discovery, metadata, users/personas etc to understand NCATS educational resource ecosystem. This can leverage Phase 1 Competency mapping work.

Determine what needs to be in it from following stakeholders perspectives (use Personas, @saragon02):

  • CTSA hub implementation
  • K, T scholars
  • Educators
  • Workforce Development DTF
  • NCATS
  • etc.

It should have sections for search, curation, metadata/ontology development, QA, currency, attribution, versioning.

Point of contacts for ontology work

Identify point of contacts for ontology work on any identified platforms/teams so we can plan ontology work and complete preliminary mappings (e.g. Erudite, 4D, etc)

Create template for landscape analysis

This should include information about:

  • the platform or source
  • content types
  • metadata requirements or use
  • Ontology requirements or use
  • Search functionality
  • curation functionality
  • ability to keep resources current
  • connectivity to other systems, such as institutional student systems
  • Attribution
  • licensing
