releases's Introduction

Releases

See all releases and the status of repos at releases.elementary.io

Building

You'll need the following dependencies:

ruby-full
build-essential
zlib1g-dev

We recommend installing gems to a (hidden) directory in your home folder:

echo '' >> ~/.bashrc
echo '# Install Ruby Gems to ~/.gems' >> ~/.bashrc
echo 'export GEM_HOME="$HOME/.gems"' >> ~/.bashrc
echo 'export PATH="$HOME/.gems/bin:$PATH"' >> ~/.bashrc
echo '' >> ~/.bashrc
source ~/.bashrc

Install bundler:

gem install bundler

Install gems:

bundle install

Build and serve locally with:

bundle exec jekyll serve --host 0.0.0.0

The site should now be available at http://0.0.0.0:4000/ on your local machine, and your local machine's IP address on your network—great for testing on mobile OSes.

Updating Data

_data/repos.json is automatically rebuilt from a GitHub Action, but you can build it for local development:

First, create a GitHub token with repo permissions and copy it somewhere safe.

Then, make sure you have pip and PyGithub. On elementary OS:

sudo apt install python3-pip
pip install PyGithub

Lastly, run release.py re-using your token as an environment variable, e.g.:

GITHUB_TOKEN=ghp_aBcDeFgHiJkLmNoPqRsTuVwXyZ python3 release.py

releases's Issues

Show multiple releases, maybe within a timeframe?

Right now this just shows the latest release of each repo, which is super handy… but if we want to replace https://github-releases.peteruithoven.nl/, we should have a way to see all of the releases in the last month—not just the most recent one.

I.e. if Gala had two releases in March, those are both important to know and write about in the monthly updates post.

Not 100% sure how we should expose this.

Please add OS Upgrades in eOS 7

Problem

Every time a new version of eOS is released, the operating system must be reinstalled.

Proposal

Please add OS Upgrades (https://github.com/orgs/elementary/projects/103) in OS 7

Unable to install 7.0 release

What Happened?

I'm trying to install release 7.0 Horus but neither UEFI nor BIOS mode generates a working installation.

UEFI

The installation seems to be fine but the BIOS is unable to find a boot entry.

$ sudo bootctl list --esp-path /mnt
No boot loader entries found.

The directory contains EFI/ubuntu/... and EFI/BOOT/... with many .efi files.

BIOS

The installation crashes with something like this: https://superuser.com/questions/903112/grub2-install-this-gpt-partition-label-contains-no-bios-boot-partition.
I tried to edit the partition labels with gedit but didn't find the correct one to satisfy this step.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. write iso to usb stick
  2. advanced installation
  3. select /dev/sda1 as boot partition
  4. select /dev/sda2 as root partition

Expected Behavior

any of the boot environments should create a working installation

    2.Click
    3.The date marked is different.

bug

To solve this you have to restart the machine or login logout.
I suspend my machine, not power off.

No wifi after Elementary OS Horus update om my CSL Panther Tab HD

Hello,

I don't know if my query is correct. I tried the google translator.
Unfortunately, my English is dusty - excuse me

There was an operating system update yesterday.
I am now at kernel version 5.19.0-32 generic.

Something has also happened with the firmware updates.
The two additional icons have disappeared again today.
But now my WLAN has disappeared - no networks are displayed,
I can no longer access the WEB.
With network settings you can only choose one VPN network
or configure a proxy access.

I ask for help.

kind regards
Gert

Build an actual template

Since we nuked the minimal template with #20, we should build an actual simple template around it with all the pieces like a head, footer, etc. and then some nice default typography rules.

Show release title/body

It'd be dope to show the release title and body on this page so we don't have to click through to each release

Make a difference between code commits and translation commits

Problem

Many commits are just translation commits. If you want to see, if there was a commit on code base,
we need make a distinction.

Proposal

Some proposals:
Instead showing the amount of commits, count the code commits and the translation commits seperately.

Prior Art

Release body being inserted as raw markdown

What Happened

The markdown formatting, it's gone!
Screenshot from 2021-09-23 08 48 40

Steps to Reproduce

The only difference I can see is that Danielle made the releases for the repos that aren't working, as opposed to the bot. All of the repos with user-created releases have the issue, but Calendar and Appcenter are the others I spotted that have side-by-side releases with the bug.

I see Elementary OS 7.0 in a beautiful but eye-damaging pink/red.

What Happened?

IMG_0045

This happens as soon as the login screen is displayed. Before that, everything is displayed in normal values.
Also, the error happens both in test mode and after installation, but the installer is still displayed normally

However, a screenshot with the screenshot tool shows normal color values.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Start test mode

Expected Behavior

A normal representation of the operating system

n commits since last release

I'd really like to be able to at a glance see how many commits there have been since the last release so that it's more clear what is stale vs active and needing a release

Generate an RSS feed

What Happened

I tried to subscribe to the RSS feed I found from the <head> tag:

<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="elementary Blog" href="https://releases.elementary.io/feed.xml">

but it failed.

Going to the https://releases.elementary.io/feed.xml URL shows a 404 error page.

Expected Behavior

Being able to subscribe and receive the releases updates.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Install an RSS Feed reader
  2. Try to add the URL https://releases.elementary.io/feed.xml

Platform Information

Doesn't really count here.

PPA 404s

What Happened?

Converting Ubuntu to Elementary, PPAs add but 404 during aptitude update. Other PPAs on https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/ update fine.

Steps to Reproduce

sudo aptitude update

Expected Behavior

[FEATURE] Auto themes to apps

Problem

Apps, like FileZilla and Firefox use system colors, but Elementary OS Odin doesn't seem to set any system colors whatsoever, resulting in Firefox(with system colors on) being light mode when dark mode is on in the settings.

Proposal

Maybe Elementary OS Odin can set system colors based on the theme, so apps with auto system color will auto set to dark/light mode.

It'd be great if we could add links to the repos themselves

UEFI Boot Failure on Dell Precision 5530

What Happened

Release build of 6.0 has an EFI boot failure when written to USB.

Expected Behavior

Successful boot from USB.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Write 20210810 ISO to a USB stick (tried dd, cp, and Balena Etcher)
  2. Boot from USB stick using UEFI.

Logs

Attached as picture, as it's an EFI error.
