Another option - can we just monitor efficiency during the tree search and dynamically scale the thread count to maximise speed? I.e. rather than do a separate (and somewhat slow) analysis to get the best number of threads, we could just start with whatever is set via -nt, and then try e.g. halving it on the second iteration of tree search, to see if that speeds things up.

closing this because we now have the solution outlined in #13
NB: the solution we went with is number 1: if users set -nt AUTO then it will behave as above, which is sensible and sufficient for almost all use cases.
