Editing the lab website

Below, we explain how to edit the lab webpage

Add posts

It's very easy to add post. All the posts are located in _posts folder. It arrangement is based on date. Each post can be written in markdown format. You just have to state headers before writing: title, description and categories. description will be shown when you share on social media like Facebook or twitter. See the following headers:

---
title: Summer School in Computational Sensory-Motor Neuroscience (CoSMo)
description: all links to CoSMo summer school in computational neuroscience materials
categories: scientists
---

We have 4 categories: scientists, students, discussion, blog you can choose and this will be rendered to different location.

How to add posts

  • Directly edit on Github, you can simply go to _posts and click New file then put some markdown file e.g. 2016-02-03-post-name.md and start writing blog post. Github also allows you to preview it so it's nice for people who don't want to clone the repo.

  • Clone the repository, kind of the same as directly add post on Github. You just have to clone the repository. Then add new post file, commit and push to the repo.

The changes will take approximately half a minute to render. You can see the new posts or changes on kordinglab.com!

Add yourself

You can add yourself to the page in _people folder just create file name <firstname>_<lastname>.md in the folder. We require few line of header before you start writing your own page. See the following for the header

---
name: Eva Dyer
position: postdoc
avatar: eva.jpg
twitter:
---

If you don't have information, just leave it blank. The avatar will bring photo from images/people folder and display it on people page. For lab position, you can choose position from 4 classes including postdoc, gradstudent, visiting, others (so called Honorary members). Position will put you into section that you choose.

Add new publications

All publications from the lab are located in publications.md. Please upload new publication on your own!

Add news

All news presented in the front page by editing _data/news.yml. There are some symbol that cannot be used directly e.g. :, be careful

kordinglab.github.io's Issues

Adding yourself to the page

We have a lot of incoming lab members now and maybe it's a good time to add yourself on the page! >> @tliu526, @rachit2403 (maybe more)!

Dispaly information when people share post

Custom each blog post to be sharable on social media like Facebook or Twitter including display images in the post, title and description (for this one we have to add it to the post).

Add footer for the page

Probably a good idea to add small footer which contains information about the lab to the page.

About page changes

  • I think we will have to to change the "About us" section a little bit, with the incorporation of new fields.
  • the "Research" section needs to be updated a little more heavily.
  • We should discuss if we need collaborators or not. And if we do end up adding them, then we should add collaborators that have worked with us since the year.

New Blog and Resources Page

  • Merging the two pages
  • Emphasis on the blog, using wiseodd format
  • Lab teachings, below the blogs.
  • Then other resources

Licensing

What is the licensing on this webpage please?

Custom css file

  • adjust code section to be full width (no padding).
  • change display font or looking on resource page. It's now hard to watch through all the posts.

Create alumni list

We'll create .md file for each alumni from old page each will have alumni status and we can put link if they have new link.

Publications page changes

  • I was thinking its better to add the publications from the last 3 years i.e (2019, 2018, 2017) and categorize as most recent publications. Anyway there is a link to Konrad's scholar page.
  • Each year will consist for all publications by anyone in the lab.
  • Attach a link to the code like previous articles.

Update new location of the lab and phone

We're moving to Ability lab (20th floor) across the street of old Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. However, I don't know the exact address of this place yet.

Lab culture page

Add a page at the top level (so it appears in the menu bar) that introduces our lab culture to prospective students.

  • Photos of the new lab environment
  • list of things we do (lab teachings, retreats, etc.)

People page changes

  • Remove members who have left.
  • Making profile photos same size.
  • Adding a new section for Research Staff (for me and Shaofei)
  • Maybe we should remove Alumni (photos) because we have a table. We should discuss.
  • Everyone one should have a page, either hosted on the lab profile or you can direct to your own webpage.

Home page changes

Changes in homepage:

  • Change group photo
  • Add a news section on the home page below our address (just above the tweets). The news section will have any new accomplishments (new preprints/publications/talks/scholarships etc.) [2 month time frame]. Each member should add it themselves. This issue is just to create a section for it, and start populating it.
