Building the website

Install the latest version of Zola, clone the repo, and from the root of the repo type

zola serve

Zola will build the website and start a web server, usually at http://127.0.0.1:1111

happy to update this to be clearer - but it does say a " a globally federated cluster of trusted “Identity Servers” (IS) " and "The precise architecture of identity servers is currently in flux and subject to change as we work to fully decentralise them."

"trusted" indicates that it's not an open system, no?

This is not simple due to the design of the protocol, since matrix rooms contain a continuous stream of events. I hear work is being done on this though.

Add FAQ entry about Matrix URLs and using matrix.to (938)

Proposed text: something along the lines of

Q: How do I create a link to a Matrix room or user?
A: You can link to a Matrix room or user by going to https://matrix.to, and typing in the room alias or ID for linking to rooms, or a user's Matrix ID for linking to users. In the future, there will be a URL scheme for Matrix rooms and users, similar to email's mailto scheme, or XMPP's xmpp scheme.

Bulleted lists don't show up correctly

See for example, https://matrix.org/docs/projects/other/sydent.html and https://matrix.org/docs/projects/other/mxisd.html.

The problem here is that the CSS on matrix.org is a complete rat's nest, and for some reason it disables bullets on lists. (It appears we bluntly apply the complete CSS for the Wordpress Divi builder to every page, which apart from making me want to weep, also includes ol, ul { list-style: none; }.)

I'm not sure I have the mental stamina to rewrite the CSS on matrix.org today.

Create public forum for Matrix & Riot community talks in matrix.org website (945)

I know that Matrix developers in future want to implement something like community forum based on Matrix, not with any special forum engine. This is good idea, but not feasible at near future: there are too much work for implement all forum features in Matrix core.

But Matrix community need forum already now! Please implement forum now, using some popular forum engine, for example http://flarum.org/

Matrix is very useful solution for instant messaging and online group talking. But Matrix functional can't replace classic representation of static information like in forums:

• Matrix messages are instant, so they short and not too informative, even if people talking in specific room with topic - most of messages is unnecessary, like "ok, i try it". Because instant message means instant reply, not delayed.

• Classic forums provide another way for community talking - long delayed talk: author of each message don't hope to get instant reply to his message, so it spend more time to create content of message and group full info into one post.

As result, forum threads are more informative and readable to community, instead of instant chat logs.

Also forum html pages are successfully indexed via search engines, this give new users to Matrix community and provide good semantic search by forum content.

As I see, people now actively use GitHub Issues in Matrix community like forum threads, instead of Matrix rooms, because they want to talk not instantly, but delayed talks. And they use GitHub issues like forum threads for asking questions, discuss about feature requests, long talks about problems, etc. But GitHub Issues is not good place for those content.

So please don't wait distant future when Matrix implement all forum features in his core. Please install some forum engine for Matrix community now, and when Matrix core will be ready - we can replace forum core from old engine to Matrix.

I would consider porting as finished and wanted to inform that the library is ready for merging upstream. Because olm is not deployed anywhere (maven) cross compilation isn't really needed, therefore our buildscripts may need some adjustments.
