SoftwareTimeStamping

Description

This is a PowerShell Module and DSC Resources that can Get/Enable/Disable the Software Timestamping configuration.

Note The PowerShell cmdlets and DSC resources do NOT restart the network adapters. This is required prior to timestamping settings being effectual. To do this, you can use Restart-NetAdapter or restart the computer.

Installation

This module can be installed from the PowerShell Gallery. To do this run the following command from an elevated PowerShell prompt: Install-Module SoftwareTimestamping

Alternatively you can copy the SoftwareTimeStamping Folder into C:\Program Files\WindowsPowerShell\Modules

Test

Please try out our validation guide! https://github.com/Microsoft/W32Time/blob/master/Timestamping/docs/Validation%20Guide%20-%20RS5%20-%20Software%20Timestamping.docx

w32time's Issues

it won't work

after importing PTP section into register ; after opening the firewall ports; after restarting the w32tm & after executing resync it would return:

 w32tm /resync
Sending resync command to local computer
The computer did not resync because no time data was available.

while the regedit shows explicitly my ptp server setup it wouldn't be returned by the verbose output of the command below:

w32tm /resync
Sending resync command to local computer
The computer did not resync because no time data was available.

PTP client operational, yet system time is wrong

I seem to have a working PTP setup syncing with a SecureSync 2400 on Windows server 2022 (20348.2113), and i see time adjustment messages in the event log, yet time on the computer is wrong by about 37 seconds. What gives? I have pasted the output/contents of various commands and logs below. The only thing i see that is perhaps a problem is that PTP_UTC_REASONABLE is false, but then it seems that frequency adjustments are being made anyway. Do i need to get this set to true for things to start working, or could it be something else?
And actually, i would expect the clock offset to just be fixed in a single shot instead of using frequency adjustment, since i set the MaxAllowedPhaseOffset to 1 (on purpose, i want any larger offsets that may have occurred when the computer has been off for a while to be corrected immediately at boot), and the offset is about 37 seconds.

PTP Missing PTPclient register key

I am running Windows 10 Enterprise 1809 and trying to sync to a ptp server. I am looking at the registry keys Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\TimeProviders and I am missing the PtpClients. Am I supposed to download it somewhere? Or does it appear after I pull this repo down?

PTP Client not synching

I've setup a PTPd grandmaster on another system using the instructions, and conf file, from the "Windows Subsystem for Linux for testing Windows 10 PTP Client" techcommunity blog. My PtpClient registry entries are as follows:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\TimeProviders\PtpClient]
"PtpMasters"="10.0.50.43"
"Enabled"=dword:00000001
"InputProvider"=dword:00000001
"DllName"="C:\Windows\System32\ptpprov.dll"
"DelayPollInterval"=dword:00003e80
"AnnounceInterval"=dword:00000fa0
"EnableMulticastRx"=dword:00000000

Querying the w32tm configuration shows the PtpClient as the only enabled TimeProvider, and Wireshark shows that I'm receiving Announce, Follow_Up, and Sync messages from the grandmaster. Here's a sample of the Announce Message contents:

The domain is 0, and PTP_TIMESCALE and PTP_UTC_REASONABLE are both non-zero. But, the PtpClient doesn't appear to be receiving any of this information. When I look in the event viewer, I'm just getting event 515:

Ptp Provider Configuration:

Why is the PtpClient either not receiving, or using, the Announce Message?

PTP client expects a valid/non-zero originTimestamp in SYNC message

When using linuxptp as master the SYNC message originTimestamp is filled with 0 since the standard allows it.
Windows PTP client tries to sync but ends up with a very inaccurate update:

153408 15:23:54.8987968s - PtpClient returned 1 samples.
153408 15:23:54.8988202s - Intersection successful with 0 dropped samples.

When using up ptpd as master the SYNC message originTimestamp is filled with approximate time and windows ptpclient succeeds.

In both cases it's a two step sync with a FOLLOW_UP message.

Should be able to configure a fallback or priority of sources

The priority of the various possible time sources should be configurable.

One should be able to configure a preference or priority of time sources, such that if PTP fails or is unavailable, instead of reverting to the system clock and drifting, the machine can fallback to a different PTP master, or a different PTP domain, or an array of NTP sources, or the domain hierarchy.

The service should make periodic checks to flip back to its preferred time configuration.

Software Timestamping API Documentation

We use hardware timestamps on Linux machines for packet capture. Using hardware timestamps allow us to have a sub-microsecond-level of accuracy for our incoming packets. Until now, that capability has been far out of reach on Windows. The Software Timestamps functionality would go a long way towards single-microsecond resolution in packet captures, based on what you've described.

Is there documentation available for how to access the new Software Timestamp via an API call? Will this data only be available for NDIS Filter Drivers and the like, or will it bubble all the way up to user space?

Layer 2 PTP Not Supported?

I want to sync Windows time via IEEE 802.1AS (gPTP). The PTP payload is directly encapsulated in the Ethernet packet (Ethertype 0x88f7) rather than IP/UDP.

Am I correct in understanding Windows doesn't currently support this?

PTP not working

I've followed the guide closely but can't get this to work. Am seeing PTP packets and see PTP_TIMESCALE and PTP_UTC_REASONABLE flags set to 1.

 .... .... .... 1... = PTP_TIMESCALE: True
    .... .... .... .1.. = PTP_UTC_REASONABLE: True

.... 0010 = versionPTP: 2
subdomainNumber: 0

All I get in the event log is the following:

Ptp Provider Configuration:

Allowed Masters:192.168.xx.xx
Announce Interval:4000(msec)
Delay Poll Interval:16000(msec)
IfTstmp:1

Current Tick Count:30152046

We know that PTP source is OK as the 3rd party PTP software we are trying to replace works.

Windows SoftwareTimeStamping does not work on physical Windows desktop versions

As the „Validation Guide - Software Timestamping.docx” mentions that the supported OS-es are Windows Server 2019 and Windows 10 (v1809) or later. But this is not actually accurate.

As @Donis- mentioned in #8 this phenomenon may have some similarities to his/her issue.

I’ve done some testing in our lab, and it shows the following:

Windows Server 2019 Standard or Datacenter can enable this feature (Enable-SWTimestamping -NetAdapterName '[Name of the Ethernet connection]') as per in the forementioned document. Regardless it is a physical or a virtualized computer.

On the other side, desktop versions like Windows 10 Enterprise/Pro for Workstations or 11 Enterprise are capable of enabling this feature only if they are in a virtualized environment.

I’ve done everything word-by-word as in the Validation Guide. But for some reason the desktop physical clients always show this log entry:

“Rx timestamp not returned and may be unsupported on the current network interface.”

On this same machine I’ve installed Windows Server 2019 Standard and after that Datacenter with clean installs each time, I can see something like this in the log file:

“HA ESD:1 ASD:0 ETD:236 ATD:953 (FT units)”

So here are the steps to reproduce this:

There are the computers, and their roles:

DC.contoso.com  Windows Server 2019 Standard VM on Hyper-V
DC2.contoso.com  Windows Server 2019 Standard VM on Hyper-V
DC4.contoso.com  Windows Server 2019 Datacenter physical machine, PDC role
DC5.contoso.com  Windows Server 2019 Datacenter physical machine
HV1.contoso.com  Windows Server 2016 Datacenter, physical machine, Hyper-V role
Runs DC.contoso.com and DC2.contoso.com VMs
HV2.contoso.com  Windows Server 2016 Standard, physical machine, Hyper-V role
Runs vm001.contoso.com  Windows 10 Enterprise and vm002.contoso.com  Windows 10 Pro for Workstations
desktop001.contoso.com  Windows 10 Enterprise, physical machine,runs VMWare Workstation 16 Pro
runs  vm003.contoso.com  Windows 11 Enterprise Insider Preview, VM
runs  srv001.contoso.com  Windows Server 2022 Datacenter, VM
[desktop002].contoso.com  this physical machine was the test bench. With all clean installation of OS-es I added different names to the computer, SRV02, 03, DESKTOP010, 011 respectively.

I’ve installed Windows Server 2019 Standard and Windows Server 2019 Datacenter and configured timestamping. It works.

Then I’ve installed Windows 10 Enterprise and Windows 10 Pro for Workstations and configured timestamping. It didn’t work for neither.

Even further on desktop001 on the host Windows 10 Enterprise, timestamping didn’t work. But on the VMs running inside VMware it works.

On the Domain Controllers, regardless it is VM or physical, it works.

I’ve also tried on two different desktops in the domain, running Windows 10 Enterprise, it didn’t work.

So, my conclusion is that Windows desktop OS-es only supports timestamping, when they run in some kind of virtualization environment.

But why?

Can someone please point to the right direction, to make it work on physical desktop OS-es.

Update: Added the log files from same hardware, different OS.

Windows SW timestamping does not work on server 2019 standard

Please describe the issue in 2-3 sentences. Include what you're trying to accomplish when the issue occurs.
We have setup PTP as per:
https://github.com/microsoft/W32Time/blob/master/Precision%20Time%20Protocol/docs/Validation%20Guide%20-%20Precision%20Time%20Protocol.docx
And it's working fine.
Now we try to setup "SW timestamping" as per:
https://github.com/microsoft/W32Time/blob/master/Timestamping/docs/Validation%20Guide%20-%20Software%20Timestamping.docx
But it doesn't seem to work.

When did it begin and how often does it occur?
Enabling new feature, never had it working.

What errors do you see?
We can verify that the registry setting "SoftwareTimestampSettings" is set to 5 for the NIC.
Get-SWTimestamping also returns correct NIC and setting.
NIC is restarted using Restart-NetAdapter.
When enabling w32time logging as per guide, we get no messages with ASD/ETD.
Also we see no message with "RX timestamp not returned and may be unsupported on the current network interface."

What's the environment and are there recent changes?
Windows server 2019 standard with all updates up to now.
Version: 10.0.17763 Build 17763
HW PowerEdge R610
NIC: Intel Ethernet Converged Network Adapter X710-4

What have you tried to troubleshoot this?
Tried on 2 other machines.
Tried disabling/enabling via cmdlets, via registry.
No log entries as described in the guide.
We also setup PTP synced linux machine to monitor PTP traffic from the windows server.
When we measure the difference between linux machine system time and "Delay Request Message".origintimestamp coming from windows server we see around 60us average difference.
This difference does not change when we enable/disable SW timestamping feature, hence the hypothesis that SW timestamping might not be working as it doesn't affect the "Delay Request Message".origintimestamp.

Must be able to configure/specify interface for multicast join

On machines with multiple interfaces, we lack the ability to control on which interface the time service joins the multicast group. This occasionally leads to occasions where the time service joining the appropriate multicast group on the wrong interface (or on one physical interface of a teamed adapter), which inevitably cause the service to fall back to local CMOS clock.

PTP domain issues

When following the guide for PTP setup in Windows 10 it seems that W32Time will only sync if PTP domain is 0. I used 2 setups, one is Trimble GM200 grandmaster and another is Tektronix SPG8000 grandmaster + Mellanox SN2010 switch as boundary clock and the end result is the same. There are no events in "PTP-Operational" when PTP domain is different from 0.

Here is the output of w32tm /query /status /verbose when PTP domain is 0:

Leap Indicator: 0(no warning)
Stratum: 3 (secondary reference - syncd by (S)NTP)
Precision: -23 (119.209ns per tick)
Root Delay: 0.0010918s
Root Dispersion: 0.0100020s

State Machine: 2 (Sync)
Time Source Flags: 0 (None)
Server Role: 0 (None)
Last Sync Error: 0 (The command completed successfully.)
Time since Last Good Sync Time: 1.9590114s

Here is when PTP domain is different from 0:

Leap Indicator: 3(not synchronized)
Stratum: 0 (unspecified)
Precision: -23 (119.209ns per tick)
Root Delay: 0.0000000s
Root Dispersion: 0.0000000s
ReferenceId: 0x00000000 (unspecified)
Last Successful Sync Time: unspecified
Source: Local CMOS Clock
Poll Interval: 10 (1024s)

Phase Offset: 0.0000000s
ClockRate: 0.0156250s
State Machine: 0 (Unset)
Time Source Flags: 0 (None)
Server Role: 0 (None)
Last Sync Error: 1 (The computer did not resync because no time data was available.)
Time since Last Good Sync Time: 19.4881785s``

Events are bein populated only when PTP domain is 0
event

And lastly, here are the PTP settings of Trimble grandmaster. Using the same settings with PTP domain different from the 0 will not work with W32Time
trimble

Is there any way to change the PTP domain via registry or similar or there is indeed an issue where only PTP domain 0 is supported?
