R para Análisis Científicos Reproducibles

Una introducción a R para no-programadores utilizando los datos de Gapminder. R y un conjunto de paquetes desarrollados por terceros, se usa comúnmente en diversas disciplinas científicas para el análisis estadístico. In 'Explorando Data Frames' there is no explanation about the Warning message when rows are added. For someone starting to do this from scratch this may be a bit confusing, adding a little explanation (or a question 'qué crees que significa este mensaje?') will probably help the learner get familiar with warning messages in R

Adding basic ggplot syntax at the start of the lesson

Comparing the data visualization section between the R-ecology workshop (http://www.datacarpentry.org/R-ecology-lesson/04-visualization-ggplot2.html) and this one (https://swcarpentry.github.io/r-novice-gapminder-es/08-plot-ggplot2/index.html) I feel this lesson could benefit by starting on the structure/syntax of creating a plot plus the idea behind the grammar of graphics.

For example, the ecology lesson provides the example of the syntax:

ggplot(data = <DATA>, mapping = aes(<MAPPINGS>)) + <GEOM_FUNCTION>()

While the spanish lesson jumps directly into the creation of a plot

library("ggplot2") ggplot(data = gapminder, aes(x = gdpPercap, y = lifeExp)) + geom_point()

Furthermore, I feel that it'd be beneficial to state that one of the benefits of ggplots is that we are able to add layers (ie, different "geometries" with geom_*) and thus create more complex plots in a more structured manner.

Data type issue when loading data.

I have identify in Lesson 5 "Explorando data frames" that, when loading the gapminder dataset:

gapminder <- read.csv("data/gapminder-FiveYearData.csv")

the parameter stringsAsFactor is never used. It's ok for the main lessons, because when they invoke str(gapminder) it is shown that country and continent are characters vector. But in the Solution to Challenge 4, where the student must analyze the output from str(gapminder), it is annotated that country and continent are factors. But they are not, they are character vectors.

In order to solve this, the read.csv( ) must be used with stringsAsFactor = TRUE, or change the Solution to Challenge 4 to say that country and continent are characters vector.

Something similar happen in Lesson 13 "Manipulación de data frames con dplyr". The gapminder dataset, used in previous lessons, is processed using:

gdp_bycontinents <- gapminder %>% group_by(continent) %>% summarize(mean_gdpPercap=mean(gdpPercap))

however, when gdp_bycontinents variable is called, the output say that continen is <fctr>, but it should say <chr>. Again is not clear if the original dataset is loaded via read.csv( ), using the parameter stringsAsFactor =TRUE or not.

Curiously, on Lesson 14 "Manipulación de data frames usando tidyr", a wide version of gapminder dataset is loaded, and until this lesson it is shown that the parameter stringsAsFactors = FALSE is used and it is explained why.

In general, these kind of situations tell me that maybe the read.csv( ) function was updated and the stringsAsFactors parameter default value was changed from TRUE to FALSE, not having the necessity to specify it in Lesson 14, but also altering some outputs from lessons 5 and 13.

RFC: Migration to R 4.0

During the June Maintainer meeting, we asked for comments and experiences with the migration to R 4.0 so that we could create guidance for maintainers and instructors. We have drafted a short blog post (carpentries/carpentries.org#830) to be released next week (2020-08-03) that describes our recommendations for migration. You can find a preview of the blog post here. Please look over the blog posts and make comments by 2020-07-30 so that we can incoroporate any changes before the post goes live.

To help identify the differences between R 3.6 and R 4.0, I have run this lesson in both versions and posted the results that show the differences in output chunks and entire markdown files.

Error messages in "Explorando data frames"

In "Explorando Data Frames" episode when we run

gatos <- rbind(gatos, nueva_fila)

there is no an error message about "invalid factor level". May add a little a chunk of code and show the error message obtained to become clear.

Transition to standardized GitHub labels

The lesson infrastructure committee unanimously approved the proposal of using the same set of labels across all our repositories during its last meeting on May 23rd, 2018.

This repository has now been converted to use the standard set of labels.

If this repository used the previous set of recommended labels by Software Carpentry, they have been converted to the new one using the following rules:

The label instructor-training was removed as it is not used in the workflow of certifying new instructors anymore. The label question was left as is when it was in use, and removed otherwise. If your repository used custom labels (and issues were flagged with these labels), they were left as is.

The lesson infrastructure committee hopes the standard set of labels will make it easier for you to manage the issues you receive on the repositories you manage.

The lesson infrastructure committee will evaluate how the labels are being used in the next few months and we will solicit your feedback at this stage. In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, please leave a comment on this issue.
