nextjs-multi-domain-locale's Introduction

nextjs-multi-domain-locale

Multiple domains and languages on the same Next.js site

This is an example of hosting multiple domains on the same Next.js site (while maintaining multiple languages and static site generation (SSG, getStaticProps)), using Next.js’ i18n system.

Demo

https://multi-domain-locale1.vercel.app/

Concept

  • Domain mapped to Next.js’ i18n locale is used to determine the site.
  • Language is instead handled via a pseudoLocale prop (pages inside a /[pseudoLocale] folder).
  • A redirect from / to /en.
  • TODO: Automatic language detection using the Accept-Language header.

See next.config.js for setup.

nextjs-multi-domain-locale's Issues

Is wildcard domain support technically feasable?

Thanks a lot for this clever idea of hijacking the i18 system for serving different static sites based on the domain.

If I understand you approach correctly, the static sites must be known ahead of time, so it would not be possible to use wildcard domains and statically generate sites on the fly. Or am I missing something?

In my use case, I would like to serve a static shell for a blog template and populate the content on the fly based on a varying subdomains. Props on first render should be dynamic, but subsequent renders should be served fully static (template + data). So basically ISR but for varying subdomains.

Let me know if your approach could be extended to achieve this goal.

Handling different slugs for same endpoint depending on lang

One reason to include Express (or similar) for handling multitenancy with Next.JS is to be able to handle different slugs/urls for the same endpoints:

But they should end up at the same endpoint. It would be awesome to find a pattern that solves this within the Next-framework without adding more moving parts to your stack. Not a bug with current setup, just and idea/finding when working with NextJS and multitenancy
