Welcome to Kodi Home Theater Software!

Kodi is an award-winning free and open source software media player and entertainment hub for digital media. Available as a native application for Android, Linux, BSD, macOS, iOS, tvOS and Windows operating systems, Kodi runs on most common processor architectures.

Created in 2003 by a group of like minded programmers, Kodi is a non-profit project run by the XBMC Foundation and developed by volunteers located around the world. More than 500 software developers have contributed to Kodi to date, and 100-plus translators have worked to expand its reach, making it available in more than 70 languages.

While Kodi functions very well as a standard media player application for your computer, it has been designed to be the perfect companion for your HTPC. With its beautiful interface and powerful skinning engine, Kodi feels very natural to use from the couch with a remote control and is the ideal solution for your home theater.

Give your media the love it deserves

Kodi can be used to play almost all popular audio and video formats around. It was designed for network playback, so you can stream your multimedia from anywhere in the house or directly from the internet using practically any protocol available.

Point Kodi to your media and watch it scan and automagically create a personalized library complete with box covers, descriptions, and fanart. There are playlist and slideshow functions, a weather forecast feature and many audio visualizations. Once installed, your computer or HTPC will become a fully functional multimedia jukebox.

Getting Started

Kodi's developers work hard to make it support a large range of devices and operating systems. We provide final as well as development builds. To get started, head over to the downloads section and simply select the platform that you want to install it on. A quick start guide to help you get acquainted with Kodi is available in our wiki.

How to Contribute

Kodi is created by users for users and we welcome every contribution. There are no highly paid developers or poorly paid support personnel on the phones ready to take your call. There are only users who have seen a problem and done their best to fix it. This means Kodi will always need the contributions of users like you. How can you get involved?

  • Coding: Developers can help Kodi by fixing a bug, adding new features, making our technology smaller and faster and making development easier for others. Kodi's codebase consists mainly of C++ with small parts written in a variety of coding languages. Our add-ons mainly consist of python and XML. For more information, please have a look at our contributing guide.
  • Helping users: Our support process relies on enthusiastic contributors like you to help others get the most out of Kodi. The #1 priority is always answering questions in our support forums. Everyday new people discover Kodi, and everyday they are virtually guaranteed to have questions.
  • Localization: Translate Kodi, add-ons, skins etc. into your native language.
  • Add-ons: Add-ons are what make Kodi the most extensible and customizable entertainment hub available. Get started building an add-on.
  • Documentation: Kodi's wiki pages are the hub for information about Kodi and surrounding ecosystem. Help make our documentation better by writing new content or correcting existing material.

Not enough free time? No problem! There are other ways to help Kodi.

  • Spread the word: Share Kodi with the world! Tell your friends and family about how Kodi creates an amazing entertainment experience. Stay up to date on the latest stories about Kodi reading our news section, follow us on Twitter and Facebook, or star Kodi's repo if you want to follow development.
  • Donate: We are always happy to receive a donation. Donations are typically used for travel to attend conferences, any necessary paperwork and legal fees, and the yearly XBMC Foundation Developers Conference, where a great deal of coding and planning for the following year occurs. Donations may also be used to purchase necessary hardware and licenses for developers, along with t-shirts, stickers, and other accessories for conferences.
  • Buy Kodi merchandise: Purchasing Kodi gear helps just as much as a donation, and you get something in return! Checkout our store for Kodi branded gear. We regularly add new products so check back often.

Building

Kodi uses CMake as its building system but instructions are highly dependent on your operating system and target platform. Fortunately we've got you covered.

Acknowledgements

Kodi couldn't exist without

[OSX] Broken AC3 Audio on OSX ML

Since Perian isn't compatible with MountainLion anymore, XBMC can't play back any kind of ac3 Audio content.
It just gives out fast clicking noices.
Eden throws Errors "Audio Hardware could not initialise" after a few seconds,
Frodo nightlies just keep on playing the "noices".

Possible solution is to switch to "ffdshow Audio Decoder" instead of Core audio (at least for AC3 content).

When I exit XBMC using the shutdown menu -> Exit, the screen goes blue and then the displays are switched.

Universal Album Scraper: Styles

I see that the styles of the universal album scraper should be set by MusicBrainz, right? On my machine, no album has any style for what I can see (using 11 - eden)

Like with the artist, I would think it would be the most helpful to set it via last.fm-tags. It's the most complete classification of the album styles available. Would this be possible? I will try to understand how these scraper-xmls work, but I guess I would need some assistance if I ought to do it.

The other thing is, that the last.fm album scraper does not set any styles.

Cheers

memory leak in xbmc/dbwrappers/mysqldataset.cpp

Before commit 1f987e7, there were issues upgrading my music database to the latest format (because of duplicate keys, which are solved by using REPLACE instead of INSERT).

This pointed out a severe memory leak in xbmc/dbwrappers/mysqldataset.cpp, which is confirmed by valgrind:

XBMC Freeze when choosing play from Video Files Menu

Environment:
Ubuntu 11.10, loosely based on XBMCbuntu.
running xbmc-standalone as unprivileged user on boot through upstart script.
Does not use windows manager, just app.
Use udisk and devmon for device mounting.
Currently experiencing it on a device with no media in the library. Have not tested to see if adding content makes a difference.

Reproduce:
From the main menu, select videos, press ok.
On the directory listing, go up a directory ("..")
Open the context menu for the entry "Files" and select "Play"

At this point, no matter what I do, the system "Freezes". If I currently have anything playing (Video, Music, DVD) it continues, but the UI becomes completely unresponsive. In fact, if video is playing, since the menu overlays on top of the video canvas, the video stops playing, but the audio continues. Essentially, it appears as if the X windows client has locked. SSH sessions run fine and irw still reports remote key codes. Neither remote nor keyboard presses have any impact on app. The log files continually show entries for files not found. I am actually unsure if that menu option should even be available as I suppose it plays all files on all media attached, right?

Really just want to make sure that menu item never gets clicked accidentally as the only way to recover is to reboot.

set custom % when a file gets marked as seen.

There are many times I stop a movie before the file has ended. To skip credits etc. It would be great if you could either manually set your own % when you want the seen flag to trigger or if it was a fixed amount after maybe 60-70%

Logitech Google TV Keyboard Support

I have two Logitech Google TV keyboards (Logitech Revue (http://goo.gl/YRXlH) and Logitech Mini Controller (http://goo.gl/X5iiT)). They both have custom buttons on them that I am able to get working in Windows using EventGhost. I would like to have these buttons do something in Linux as well. From what I have researched (and I may be way wrong on this) the key codes need to be added to key.h, then I can assign functions to them in Keymap.xml.

Is this correct? If so, what can I provide to help get these excellent media center keyboards fully working in XBMC? Do you need the key codes? If so, can I just run xev and provide the output?

Thank you.

Freezes with VAAPI and fglrx on Linux

Hi,

im running the latest XBMC from github for a year now.
Im running Opensuse 12.1 64Bit on a E35M1-I DELUXE System which has a AMD Radeon HD 6310 Graphics card. Im using the latest fglrx drivers.
Every now and then when playing full hd videos, or those which get decoded by vaapi, xbmc completely freezes. I cannot even kill -9 it. At the bottom of this post are the kernel messages when such a freeze happened.
Every other now and then vaapi fails for some reason and i dont get accelerated video output which leads to slow frame rates. I need to restart the whole computer to get vaapi acceleration again. I tried unloading and reinserting the fglrx module, but that didnt help.

Im always updating my system as new updates are available. So this problem exists for a long time now on my system on various xbmc and fglrx versions up to the current versions.

Plese let me know if you need more information.

[Linux] No GLES/EGL support for VAAPI

Is anyone already working on adding GLES/EGL support for VAAPI (xbmc/cores/dvdplayer/DVDCodecs/Video/VAAPI.cpp and xbmc/cores/VideoRenderers/LinuxRendererGLES.cpp)?

At the moment, DVDPlayer is able to use libva when using OpenGLES/EGL.

Thanks,
TG

here's the relevant part of the build log. I'm sure it has something to do with the new tinyxml dependency. I have v 2.6.2 installed. This is a gentoo box. Let me know if you need anything more.

[TV Library] [Linux] Backslash character treated incorrectly

XBMC appears to refrain from indexing files with "" in the name.

Most likely treating it as a directory even though it is not on Linux.

Example: A file named "Show Name - S01E01 - Title Stuff \ More Title Stuff.avi" will never be indexed correctly.

Expected behavior, is that this should be indexed, as it is a valid character on the filesystem.

no arrow keys at shutdown timer

hi,

when i try to set a custom shutdown timer within XBMC it is not possible to select the number via the arrow key's.

it not that comfortable when using a gamepad (wiimote) or a remote with minimal buttons.

Thank you for this awesome software.

Username and Password visible in video information AWX webinterface

Apparently the user-name and password used for shares, are visible in plain text in the AWX webinterface. It is not acceptable that this information (especially the password offcourse) is available to other parts of XBMC to be displayed in plain text.

I've disabled the AWX webinterface for now, but I'm not sure if there are any other plugins of XBMC have the same issue.

[FEATURE REQUEST]Parental control on shares

I would like to see a hook for parental control on shares, NFS or Samba or whatever. This should be able to be done by hooking the library mode and files mode using IMDB or thetvdb.com ratings.

Maybe even block based on content.

Currently the only way to do this is setup different shares and manage it yourself. This is clunky and doesn't flow with a normal setup. Thanks!

VOB video_ts files from SMB server do not play

The following steps describe this problem.

  1. Rip DVD using k9copy in Ubuntu 12.04 as a un-encrypted DVD containing video_ts and VOB files
  2. Copy to SMB server
  3. Attempt to Stream in XBMC from a client PC.
  4. Video will only play if in a fresh XBMCbuntu OS, preferably accessed by booting the iso and clicking "try ubuntu" when prompted. All other installations (like installing XBMC in linux) do not work.
  5. Description of "does not work:" XBMC displays "Working" in the bottom right corner of the screen with a moving animation. Sending keyboard/mouse input to XBMC causes everything to hang (including freezing of the circle-animation icon). Application must be killed manually from the OS.

XBMC versions affected: current stable release, current nightlies as of 5/28/12.
Platform: Ubuntu 12.04, Fresh install
Replicated problem on two different laptops using three different OS installs (Ubuntu 11.10 had the same issue).

Log File Errors:
22:36:44 T:2896681792 ERROR: CDVDPlayer::OpenInputStream - failed to open [smb://SERVER/Movies/MovieName/VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.IFO] as DVD ISO, trying Bluray

22:36:47 T:2827537216 ERROR: InputStream: dvd streams not supported for thumb extraction, file: smb://SERVER/Movies/MovieName/VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.IFO

I'm fairly confident that it is not my VIDEO_TS files causing the error, as it happens with EVERY ripped movie in this format, and I have seen it work as described previously.

Potential security vulnerability

This repository contains a vulnerable copy of libpng (https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/tree/master/lib/cximage-6.0/png), which has not applied the patch associated with CVE-2011-3048 (Memory corruption flaw).

I am not sure if the code is actually used in this project, but it is definitely something to look into.

A flaw was found in libpng's out-of-memory handling in png_set_text2() where it failed to enlarge the info_ptr->text array and didn't restore the prior state correctly, leaving a dangling pointer. Since this failure was not considered a hard error, if there were more text chunks in the file, control came back again, which led to to writing file-determined data through the dangling pointer. In order for this to be exploited to be more than a simple crash of the application linked to libpng, the attack would need to be very targeted. This flaw has been fixed in libpng 1.4.11 [1] which indicated:

Revised png_set_text_2() to avoid potential memory corruption (fixes CVE-2011-3048).

A patch is available in git [2].

[1] http://sourceforge.net/projects/libpng/files/libpng14/1.4.11/
[2] http://libpng.git.sourceforge.net/git/gitweb.cgi?p=libpng/libpng;a=commitdiff;h=78322ccdeb994c311f6175fcefdb5761f85722cb#patch24

Some applications that ignore text chunks when processing PNG image files are not vulnerable to this because the vulnerable code is not called. Firefox is one example of such an application that is not vulnerable.

Web server failed to start error after XBMC restart

This does not always happen, but it does most of the time.
The only way to fix it is killing xbmc (using kill command).
Seems something does not shut down properly.
Please note that I am running Ubuntu Lucid and the latest (and greatest) pvr master branch build (so most of the code is up to date).
I am not submitting the issue in opdenkamp's repo, since I suppose it has nothing to do with PVR.

Linux Problem with playlist and kanji

I have a problem with XBMC and particularly playlists with songs whose name and/or path contain kanji (Japanese caracteres). These are well recognized by XBMC while navigating through the music from Files menu but when I save the songs in a playlist, they are deleted :

/Path/AutorWithKanji/album/music.mp3
becomes in the playlist.m3u
/path//album/music.mp3

so that the playlist can not find the files (logical).

[Linux - webserver] xbmc ignores posix CAPABILITIES for non root user

I got xbmc running as non root user. Everything works fine except that webserver will not start even though I set the correct posix capabilities. I assigned cap_net_admin,cap_net_bind_service,cap_net_raw to xbmc.bin binary however it looks like xbmc checks for user id only and it now errors at

Cannot start Web Server as port is smaller than 1024 and user is not root

Also does "--standalone" works for non-root user with cap_net_admin set?

I have created a patch against xbmc/Application.cpp which seems to fix the problem

CD/DVD/BD Eject doent work on netboot installation

Hello there.

In am facing this problem a long time now. Any how, the eject funktion does not work at all.

dev.cdrom.lock=0 is set and xbmc is in cdrom group too, the log tells me

3:33:22 T:140635390674816 DEBUG: OnKey: return (f00d) pressed, action is Select
13:33:22 T:140635390674816 DEBUG: ExecuteXBMCAction : Translating EjectTray()
13:33:22 T:140635390674816 DEBUG: ExecuteXBMCAction : To EjectTray()

nothing happens

If i run a

"eject -i off /dev/sr0"

before, it works using the gui like it should.

I would recommend to solve this - anybody an idea for a workaround so far?

Character case not converted

Whatever the recent changes was, non-ascii characters in the home menu are no longer converted to uppercase, while ascii characters are. This is not present in Eden.

nfs 1.3 update has broken NFS share browsing; system freezes. hard reboot required.

using a nightly build of openelec; after the 9th of june; browsing to a NFS share gives me this:

20:16:34 T:3033609984 DEBUG: CGUIMediaWindow::GetDirectory (nfs://192.168.2.104/export/_Movies/)
20:16:34 T:3033609984 DEBUG: ParentPath = [sources://video/]

after that, nothing else shows in the log;
the whole system freezes up, no response, and the system requires a hard reboot. (remote does not respond, and menu audio does not sound -- the remote receiver light however lights upon button presses)

since reverting back to a build before updating NFS to 1.3, everything once again works as normal; and a log file shows this:

20:20:23 T:3033609984 DEBUG: CGUIMediaWindow::GetDirectory (nfs://192.168.2.104/export/_Movies/)
20:20:23 T:3033609984 DEBUG: ParentPath = [sources://video/]
20:20:23 T:3033609984 DEBUG: SECTION:LoadDLL(libnfs.so.0)
20:20:23 T:3033609984 DEBUG: Loading: libnfs.so.0
20:20:23 T:3033609984 DEBUG: NFS: Context for 192.168.2.104/export not open - get a new context.
20:20:23 T:3033609984 DEBUG: NFS: Connected to server 192.168.2.104 and export /export
20:20:23 T:3033609984 DEBUG: NFS: chunks: r/w 1048576/1048576
20:20:23 T:3033609984 DEBUG: RunQuery took 1 ms for 11 items query: select * from movieview WHERE c23=3318

permissions on my nfs server are fine;
another member of the OE forums has the same issue, and nothing past june 9th are useable, NFS-wise.
i conclude that the update has broken nfs browsing.

[Lircmap.xml] wrong title key mapped to KEY_TEXT, should be KEY_TITLE

In system/Lircmap.xml KEY_TEXT for devinput remote has been mapped twice

<title>KEY_TEXT</title>
<teletext>KEY_TEXT</teletext>

Therefore context screen is broken. Here is the patch to fix it. We should really use KEY_TITLE instead.

No metadata for Ogg Vorbis streams

Ogg Vorbis streaming support in XBMC has improved signficantly in the April Cycle of 11.0 for me (better buffering) which might also be due to an update of FFMPEG). However, there is still the issue that XBMC shows no metadata for this stream while Ogg Vorbis streams actually have more than your usual MP3-based shoutcast stream (separate artist, title, genre, album, tags etc.).

Example .strm file for Sofaspace:

#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:0,Sofaspace Ambient Radio
http://s1.sofaspace.net/high.ogg

On the other hand, XBMC does consider and show the track position, rather than the lengh the stream is played. For example, when tuning in, one can see in XBMC: 3:04 / 3:09 (both time positions counting up, probably due to buffering?). It's rather confusing. For an MP3-based shoutcast stream, XBMC shows: 0:00 / ∞.

Web Interface - TVView cookie not persistent

Needs a quick fix to specify number of days for cookie to be valid. Currently having to set the view to Poster for each visit.

In MediaLibrary.js, change to this:

setCookie('TVView','poster', 365);

[win7] XBMC11 doesnt save seen flag after reboot.

as topic says, after I watched a movie it got flagged as seen but after reboot there was nothing to find. It seems like this doesnt get saved onto the db? I'm using XBMC 11 official release with default settings.

Consider better MySql database versioning practices that are backwards compatible

Disclaimer: I have not looked at the schema changes that have been made from myvideos58 -> myvideos60 -> myvideos61 -> myvideos63. I mention this problem as a user, who also happens to be a full-time software developer.

IMHO, copying an entire database over, making a few changes, and renaming it is generally a poor way to version databases. It generally defeats the purpose of sharing a MySQL instance when different installs sharing a networked video collection / database have to be on exactly the same codebase / video database to work.

I think you should generally follow the policy of making changes that:

  • are only additive in nature
  • don't redefine semantics of existing fields or reorganize / rename tables for the sake of renaming them

With a couple simple rules, the schemas can accommodate new features, but not break existing clients, which is something that should be important to XBMC given various clients on various operating systems and forks like OpenElec.

If new versions of the software must make schema modifications such as de-normalization, then the changes can still be made in a backwards compatible manner with a bit of additional dev effort.

Furthermore, I think adopting something like Rails migrations would be beneficial - http://guides.rubyonrails.org/migrations.html. I haven't lived in C++ land for a long time so I'm not sure where to look on that front, but perhaps you could bring something Python based into your stack - see this SO question on Python migrations

AE changes: ATV2 issue, unable to close AudioUnit

With the AE PR's (dirty audio etc.) from yesterday I'm getting the following error on stopping a video and on xbmc exit

20:53:31 T:141496320 ERROR: CCoreAudioUnit::Close: Unable to disconnect AudioUnit. Error = -10860

so far, no impact on actual usage (audio works and stop, but still weird error)

Not sure if I should have used trac, but it seems we are slowly moving to github for most things... ?

Please kill if its still trac.

xbmc built from git crashes at startup

I assume the best way to alert devs of this is with a bug, but apologies if I'm wrong or didn't RTFM or whatever.

Building xbmc from commit 5de9c47 causes an immediate segfault upon loading XBMC:

XBMC Suddenly started to repeat playing same movie over and over automatically

I normally use pot player mini as external player in conjunction with xbmc, when i stop playing a movie or a tv serie episode using alt f4 that last movie or episode is exited then returned to xbmc movie menu then that movie or tv serie is automatically selected again (even i dont select it to play again) and starts again from the last point viewed, when i exit again that movie pressing alt f4 the preocess goes back and repeats again in a loop matter, then i have to force xbmc to quit so i can go back to select another movie, that behavior happens exacly the same with the xbmc own video player but only when the movie ends, not when i play stop on xbmc own video buttons, in that case the movie exits and go back fine, idont have a clue what its going on here, this behavior started since i upgraded to eden 11.0.

Im on:
Acer Revo 3610
Windows 7 32 bit
Eden 11.0
Confluence and Aeon Nox
2 GB Ram
Nvidia Ion GPU with the last drivers (installed about a month).

Here it's my attached debug log, i was playing the last transformers movie exited like 3 times and movie was selected automatically to play again as described, i had to hard exit xbmc to stop the loop process:

Any help will be very apprecciated.

h264_vdpau Broken on ION

Description

In Eden, my ION based system isn't able to play h264 videos when VDPAU is enabled. I tried pulling from master last night (https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/tree/1a0ad3c58227b5653c7cff7dc100445ed8a8da3b) and built but had the same results. In previous releases, VDPAU was always a little flaky on my ION - occasionally when playing a video I would get no picture but audio would play. Restarting XBMC always resolved this in the past and I brushed it off as flaky drivers.

The issue is now back with permanence in that no amount of restarting XBMC, GDM or the entire system will make h264 videos play.

Fix retina for iPad 3

Current stable and nightly builds does not support retina display on iPad 3.
My guess is the current retina detection code is good, but to work it has to be built against iOS 5.1 SDK.
See this http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9870712/ipad3-high-resolution-retina-display-issue for more information.

Two quick ideas of possible solutions :

  1. Build against 5.1, and if not possible,
  2. Change scale detection code to do a direct check on device model using something like this: https://gist.github.com/1323251

If addon is on homescreen it gets buggy

import xbmc, xbmcgui, xbmcplugin, xbmcaddon

listitem = xbmcgui.ListItem('Ironman')
listitem.setInfo('video', {'Title': 'Ironman', 'Genre': 'Science Fiction'})
xbmc.Player( xbmc.PLAYER_CORE_MPLAYER ).play("place_here_some_url", listitem)

Try to run this code from Video > Addons. And then stop video.

Then add this addon to System > Settings > Skin > Shortcuts and add this test addon to home. Run this addon from home. First of all, it wont show movie straightaway, but it shows some empty view for a sec and then it plays movie. And the worst of all, if you stop movie, it will play it again! You will end up in cycle. You have to stop movie and then press backspace.

404 errors in ARM install-pkgs.sh

Most (if not all) of the packages in the ARM installer script are 404ing for me. They seem to have moved, but I do not know where. Ideas?
