πŸ“š Important Documentation

πŸ€” What is Atlas?

Atlas is an open-source project that enhances Windows by eliminating factors negatively impacting gaming performance. Optimizations include enhanced privacy, usability, performance, and changes for minimal stutters and input lag while focusing on maintaining functionality.

πŸ‘€ Why Atlas?

πŸ”’ Enhanced Privacy

Atlas removes the majority of telemetry embedded within Windows and implements numerous group policies to minimize data collection. However, it cannot ensure privacy outside the scope of Windows, such as browsers and other third-party applications.

πŸ“ˆ Optimized Performance

Atlas strikes a balance between performance and compatibility. It implements numerous meaningful changes to improve Windows performance and responsiveness without breaking essential features. Atlas will not do tweaks for a placebo effect or marginal gains, making Atlas more stable and compatible.

πŸ›‘οΈ Security Features

Most Windows modifications remove key security features most users need to maintain a secure system. On the other hand, Atlas allows users to customize their security at their own risk while informing users about each option's pros and cons.

Some optional security features are:

  • Windows Defender & SmartScreen
  • Windows Update
    • Automatic updates are togglable
  • CPU mitigations
  • User Account Control
  • Core isolation features

βœ… Increased Usability

Atlas applies many modifications and default settings to make Windows easier to use. This includes removing commonly unneeded applications (which are reinstallable), configuring many aspects of the interface, disabling advertisements, and much more.

πŸ” Open Source and Transparent

Unlike custom Windows ISOs, Atlas is more straightforward to audit due to the use of AME Wizard. AME Wizard is controlled by Playbooks, a customizable script-esque system that can perform various tasks.

Playbooks are renamed .zip archives, with the password malte. As they primarily consist of plain text, Playbooks enable transparency, unlike custom Windows ISOs, which have many entry points for malicious activity. The few binaries in the Playbook are open source in our utilities repository, with the hashes listed here.

Although the GUI is not open source for AME Wizard, AME Wizard's entire backend (called TrustedUninstaller) is open source under MIT, which contains each action used to run Atlas. The Atlas Playbook is open source under the GPLv3 license.

πŸ”’ Legal Compliance

As Atlas doesn't redistribute a modified Windows ISO, it complies with Windows's Usage Terms. In addition, Atlas does not alter activation in Windows.

atlas's Issues

Night light

Is there a way to turn it on with a 3rd party software or a script any tips?

Intel graphics command center will not recognise games

Describe the bug
Intel graphics command center which is used by intel 6th generation graphics and above for driver versions above 24 is not recognizing supported games.

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Open intel graphics command center
  2. Click on detect games
  3. It should normally detect games within around 10 seconds but in this case it hangs there and doesn't detect anything.

Desktop Info (please complete the following information):

Publicly available brand kit

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
No.

Describe the solution you'd like
Please add some way for the public to access logomarks, icons, and logos in .svg and .png formats. This would definitely be helpful if it could be easily accessible for users wanting to make their own Atlas branded wallpapers, avatars, or whatever they wish to use to personalize their experience a bit more.

Atlas could make their brand kit accessible to the public via one of these platforms:

Adding the brand kit download somewhere else, like the Discord or in a .md file hidden somewhere, is annoying for pretty much anyoneβ€”I doubt anyone would appreciate having it anywhere else.

Describe alternatives you've considered
Make it more obvious and clear, with proper instructions on how to get access to the logo and such. If you guys deem the logo design too private to be shared with others, please state that and make some application system instead of gaining access to a link hosted on some cloud storage platform somewhere containing all of these files.

Could you please not remove windows 10 OCR from Atlas?

Hello:
I am a blind computer user interested in alternative windows, such as windows 10 ame, and AtlasOS, for performance, and accessibility reasons. Could you please include windows 10 OCR to your OS? When I run NVDA under AtlasOS 0.4.2, NVDA tells me windows 10 OCR not found. This is included with windows 10 ame, and I believe your users wouldn't notice it being included.
Thanks for the consideration.

ARP.EXE - System Error

I keep trying to fix my vs code but every time i compile using my module, I get an error that says, the code execution cannot proceed because snmapapi.dll was not found. Even though i installed the dll that was missing to System32

Random Network Hangs

Describe the bug
A clear and concise description of what the bug is. Providing an error code is highly recommended.

This "Bug" I believe is a tweak that causes my pcie adapter (Rtl8822ce from hp) to cut out. I've had this issue on ggOS in the past and it's been resolved in one of the updates (no clue which update) I've troubleshooted by my own and with Phlegm and he came to the conclusion that it was my driver version, that was incorrect.
I decided to just deal with it and wait it out.. I did and after a couple releases passed of ggOS the issue was resolved. Now the issue is back and on Atlas (main reason why I use ggOS). on discord my ping goes to max and i cannot communicate, on games everything completely freezes and continues when the connection comes back, it still shows i am connected to wifi. for example, on fortnite a game I no longer play my ping stayed the same although I couldn't move and then when I could move the ping showed 1000(or whatever) but my ping wasn't actually high
this is my prebuilt. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-omen-30l-gaming-desktop-amd-ryzen-7-series-3700x-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-rtx-2060-1tb-hdd-256gb-ssd-black/6402514.p?skuId=6402514 i've tried changing driver versions and using default windows network settings or reapplying the atlas tweaks but the issue is still here

Dektop Resolution Problem on an Dell E198WFP Monitor

I just Installed Atlas yesterday and my Screen Resolution was on 1024x768, which my Computer says that is can have 1440x900.and the only option i have is:1024x768,1152x864 and 800x600. Can someone please help me i have tried every method to fix my Screen Resolution, and not a single of them work.

Here are all of my Details of my PC:
Processor:Intel Core Duo 2 E4500 2.20GHz 2 Core

Hard Disk: 232GB
System Manufacturer: Dell Inc.
Monitor: Dell E198WFP

Typo at line 647

Unless there's some special key you implemented into Atlas that I don't know about, I'm pretty sure this is a typo. Also, I'm not sure why you would only make this mistake once if you implemented the key since you could of used it for other things which is why I think it's a typo

snip1

Add a script to re-enable Animations in AtlasOS.

Adding a script to bring back Windows Animations would be very helpful. It'd make it a lot easier than doing it manually.

Describe the solution you'd like
A script in the Atlas folder which simply returns Windows Animations.

Describe alternatives you've considered
I've been doing this on every Atlas OS install so far
I also posted it on the subreddit

reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DWM" /v "DisallowAnimations"

reg delete "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics" /v "MinAnimate"

"systempropertiesadvanced"

Performance > Settings > Click on Adjust For Best Appearance

It's very cumbersome trying to do it manually, a script would make it loads easier.

Bring back "Night light"

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
No.

Describe the solution you'd like
At the moment, the "Night light" feature part of Windows does not function properly. It is not enabling at all, and it throws an exception breakpoint when trying to enable it manually. I assume this has been removed from the fork mainly to save space and system resources.

Describe alternatives you've considered
I've been considering just installing f.lux. While this would definitely be a usable alternative, it'd be handy to still have a night light in Windows itself. One less software for us to download looking for this feature.

0.51 version not able to create an bootable flash drive

Describe the bug
I'm trying to install this new version since it's possible to access the new xbox app, but, after downloading it, and then using rufus or etcher to make the pendrive a bootable device with the os, it says it's not possible

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Download the new iso version from atlasos.net/download
  2. Download Rufus or BalenaEtcher
  3. Open Rufus/BalenaEtcher
  4. Select your flash drive and then proceeds to select the new iso
  5. See error

Expected behavior
To be able to make my flash drive an bootable device to install new version of atlas (0.5.1).

Additional context
I actually tried to create an bootable flash drive anyway but the system don't recognize the flash drive as an bootable option
I face the same problem using faceit version

Trackpad gestures not working.

Hi, I recently downloaded and installed the latest version of Atlas OS. And I'm used to using touchpad gestures like using fingers and moving them in a direction. I'm just asking to see if it's been removed or it's just the driver isn't installed since I mostly get drivers from windows 10 updates.
Linked is an image of the gestures I use from Windows 10 settings.

Exploring An Alternative Method To Get Basic Apps

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
When Atlas OS runs for the first time, one of the first things you will notice, is the archaic capabilities of Internet Explorer. For instance, downloading files from GitHub releases doesn't render properly in that browser. While it is absolutely true that Atlas OS comes with a desktop folder containing tweaks and software tools, the capabilities of the utilities folder is limited to .reg files and browsers as the .dat files fail to secure any output in a terminal. this could be improved, in many ways, automatically with the following tool, Ninite.com installer.

Describe the solution you'd like
Ninite's primary purpose, is to secure and automatically install common, every day apps needed for proper functioning of online websites and media files. I really enjoy the fact, that it does not include any bloatware in its official install choices, and you can update or install multiple apps at once with this tool. For instance, any browser, file tool or archival utility you need along with libraries, frameworks and other misc tools which are required for programs and games to run properly. Ninite could and would with a single click install, replace many of the software based tools found in Atlas OS folder today. https://ninite.com/ Which also includes an accessible option, for screen reader users. https://ninite.com/accessible

Describe alternatives you've considered
What I'm looking for, is an easier way to get up and running on Atlas OS once it is installed. Up to and including, using the 'administrator' account as the default to start with. So much of Windows management these days, is based on maintenance. Atlas OS is the only custom edition that removes 96% of roadblocks Windows users find cumbersome to use. 30% of which, is based on drivers and usable apps. Currently, Driver Pack Solution found at https://driverpack.io/en is the only way to auto install drivers, at the cost of bloatware for the effort. Bloatware that could completely be eliminated with an alternative solution, via NiNite. Driver Pack Solution is in fact open source, which would allow you to design an interface through which, a silent and bloat free experience could be created for getting and automatically installing the system drivers a particular PC would need. If there's a way to use the NiNite and Driver Pack Solution installers together to auto-accompany system detection methods for getting a list of interactive apps people would want in a single click, you would have literally 98% of the desktop marketplace begging for more across every computer, tech and software community there is. The alternatives are a manual and cumbersome list of searching, navigating unfamiliar interfaces, scrolling, clicks and browsing various different websites to do the same thing through manufacturers online support portals. The one click solution method is gaining in popularity, and I trust Atlas OS to do its best to become a completely powerful and independent version of Windows, big tech companies failed to maximize the potential of.

Additional context
As this implementation of NiNite and or custom Driver Pack Solution detection interfaces is mostly done on the back end, the best I can provide you with, at least for now, is a use case scenario that meets the needs of people who don't really understand what they need to make their computer function well. As a part of something recommended to be accessible for the widest available audience, that can do the most with the least amount of performance set backs.

Source Code Management - Open to Suggestions

Hello everyone! I have a decision to make regarding source code management and I want your opinions. As you all know, 1803 is being worked, on but with a huge hiccup: Keeping the 1803 script up to date with 20H2 changes (vice versa) is HARD.

Here are my current ideas on how to deal with this:

  1. Manually edit the script for each change (current solution, very tedious)
  2. Keep it under a single script, add if statements for versions. (Flexible, some may argue it "bloats" the script)
    3. Rewrite in different language? (dont really have a reason, other than it being a nice learning experience. Theoretically would be faster due to asynchronous processing)

I'm up for other ideas. The 3rd option may just be a side project as it's arguably not viable and would take a long time

I can't install my printer drivers

When I want to install the drivers of my printer it tells me "An error occurred while installing the product, refer to the manual"

Oculus Air Link

Describing the bug
The bug is the Oculus Air Link not working. The app, when trying to enable Oculus Air Link for Quest 1 & 2 devices, simply restarts. When it has finished restarting, Air link is still disabled.

Steps to reproduce the bug

  1. Go to Oculus and install the app from under any VR Headset Series (Quest, Quest 2, Rift, etc)
  2. Install the Oculus app
  3. Once it is done, complete the steps shown on the screen
3a. If it asks for a VR, click "Skip". It will send you straight to the menu page.
  4. Go to the settings page
  5. Go to the Beta tab
  6. If you do not see Air Link, refer to 6a
  7. If you do see Air link, attempt to turn it on. If failure to do so and Oculus App restarts, bug reproduced.

6a. Turn on "Public Test Channel"
6b. Oculus will ask for an Update + App Restart
6c. Go back to the Settings --> Beta Tab
6d. Click Restart Oculus App as Update Restart is not enough
6e. Go back to the Settings --> Beta Tab
6f. Attempt to turn on Air Link
6g. If failed to run Air Link and Oculus App restarts, bug reproduced.

Note
I have already switched to normal Windows 10 to test it out and it was just fine, simply turned on. Checked my Quest 2 and it works as well. So the problem might be something missing within the Atlas OS. I have attached an Oculus App Log below which recorded what happened during the crash. It possibly could have the cause there.

Can't change my keyboard layout

Describe the bug
When trying to change keyboard layout, an error appears saying

"SystemSettings.exe - SystemError
The system detected an overrun of a stack-based buffer in this application. This overrun could potentially allow a malicious user to gain control of this application"

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Go to 'Language settings'
  2. On ''Preferred languages' click English
  3. then click 'Options'
  4. See pop up system error

Expected behavior
To be able to change language settings

Windows Precision Drivers

I recently installed atlas os on a dell insprion 5590 and it works great.
My only problem is there is no precision drivers thus resulting in the touchpad to be detected as a mouse. If possible could precision drivers be added to the os?

Describe the bug
Can't open minecraft.net and or tiny.cc... idk why
To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

ARP Poisoning attacks & prevention

I may be wrong, but AFAIK I don't see any patches against ARP Poisoning attacks. In the post-install, not even a mention of ARP (Used search tool in Firefox) I know it isn't really a common attack that affects normal users but since Atlas is aimed @Security & with the whole "Setting a static IP" thing by default in the interactive Post-Install in the pull requests I thought it would be a good contribution.

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
Vulnerable to ARP Poisoning attacks

Describe the solution you'd like
Setting a static ARP Entry at default, although I'm sure there is going to be issues setting it as default since the majority in Atlas are bound to using RDP or some other shit like that, Servers ETC. So if not at default, atleast an option (In the interactive Post-Install)

Additional context
Command used to set a static ARP Entry:

; Demo
netsh interface ipv4 add neighbours "name of your Adapter, for example "Ethernet" (insert default gateway of your adapter here) (insert mac address of the REAL default gateway)

; Real example (This is an example, obviously the information used isn't real)

netsh interface ipv4 add neighbours "Ethernet" 192.168.0.1 00-00-00-00-00-00 (You have to use dashes, it doesn't accept : format)

From this, you could make a for loop or something. All you need is the users: Default Gateway, name of NW Adapter & Mac address attached to the default gateway

This is JUST AN IDEA, If you don't want to add it or think it's ridiculous that's up to you. It's also just not just ARP poisoning, I'm talking about patching other Network attacks (DNS Poisoning ETC) & Yes I know you're limited with patching these sorts of things, since setting a static ARP Entry isn't really "Patching" it fully. This is just an added layer of security, not a full patch. The only reason I thought it would be appropriate to write this was because you can do something about it.

Cant join any FiveM or RageMP (gta5 rp)

Describe the bug

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Go to 'FiveM/RageMP'
  2. 'Join any server'
  3. 'Load forever'

Expected behavior
I expect to load into the server, but it wont, i tried reinstalling the os still dosent work, but as soon as i installed back to normal win 10 it works, but ye, im still running atlas mainly just hope that it can work

Repeat delay should be set to short by default

Since this os focuses on performance, I think it should be delivered with repeat delay set to short by default (from keyboard settings)

p.s. also you can scrape the on-screen keyboard off from the os, and you can add powershell scripts to uninstall calculator, store and snip&sketch

Discord Issue

Removed from the AtlasOS Discord however no reason? Just woke up and was banned and it won't let me rejoin, If someone could unban my account Sniffer#5581 that would be great.

Performance slider missing in battery flyout

Hello, I did not report this as a bug, because I have thought that this is intended behaviour on desktop PCs where power isn't a problem, but on some laptops this component missing makes the CPU hover at a lower clock, and sometimes comes in handy for getting best peformance and other times better battery life when needed.
On custom power plans, like Atlas, this slider does not appear. But the problem is this slider does not appear on Balanced power plan either.
This is caused by a component removed on the Atlas NtLite preset, and I couldn't rule it out on my personal Atlas ISOs that I have built.

I mostly want to find the component to restore it in my personal preset I've made, but if the owner would commit the change into the original Atlas.xml it's even better.

Adobe Creative Cloud not working after WIFI disable script

Describe the bug
The Adobe Creative Cloud desktop app does not work properly after running the "Disable Wifi.bat" script/file bundled with Atlas.

To Reproduce
Make sure you are an ethernet user before reproducing:

  1. Install Adobe Creative Cloud to see normal behavior
  2. Run the "Disable Wifi.bat" file and restart your system
  3. Launch the Creative Cloud desktop app and see the results

Expected behavior
Keep Creative Cloud functionality just like usual.

Desktop Info:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
  • System Drive Type: NVMe
  • Version: 0.3.6

Additional context
I suppose this has something to do with how the script in "atlas-config.bat" disables the WIFI on the system. I've used different scripts in the past to disable WIFI while still having a functioning Creative Cloud experience. So a possible fix would be to look for a different way to disable WIFI in the script.

As an ethernet user, there really isn't any need that WIFI is enabled, but there are definitely different alternatives to keep normal functionality while still disabling the WIFI option/service. (as I've seen it done before)

Minecraft Launcher Fix

UPDATE, You can enable this driver to fix this issue (in cmd):

sc config wcifs start=auto
sc start wcifs

Mojang's new minecraft launcher does not work for almost everyone, including people on Default Windows. This is being investigated, but for now this is what you can do:

Please Enable God Mode By Default

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
I am a screen-reader user of modern desktop and mobile apps. One of the features I dearly miss from Windows 7, is the ability to enable god mode. This is not just a simple menu tweak, as it unlocks a lot of commands previously unknown in one single menu. It would help gamers a lot also keep track of their preferences and settings. I can't remember if Windows XP had it, but it came out around the time that computers were still using Bioses and not UEFI hardware. If I could, I'd only use that menu and disable both settings and control panel altogether to focus on an interface which is a single click to access key dialogs, windows and preferences within and throughout classic windows. It's very fast, and still exists for Windows 10 today.
Describe the solution you'd like
Enable or look into turning on God Mode by default for Atlas OS.
Describe alternatives you've considered
Doing things this way is not only cumbersome, but inaccessible as it requires a visual step. https://www.tomsguide.com/how-to/how-to-enable-god-mode-in-windows Speaking of which, there's no accessibility in Atlas OS to install it. But that's, another issue for another time. I brought God Mode up because your website targets your addition of Windows to Gamers, as far as I know. I could get sighted help to install Atlas in a rough and ready state right now, because I basically use this menu so frequently as a blind power user.
Additional context
Add any other context or screenshots about the feature request here.
This article has screen shots, and among other things, pdf documents describing god mode in detail. https://www.techrepublic.com/article/how-to-use-god-mode-in-windows-10/
