Universal Extractor 2 is a tool designed to extract files from any type of extractable file.

Unlike most archiving programs, UniExtract is not limited to standard archives such as .zip and .rar. It can also deal with application installers, disk images and even game archives and other multimedia files. An overview of supported file types can be found here

This program is an unofficial updated and extended version of the original UniExtract by Jared Breland. As the development of the original version has stopped and no update has been published for years, many forks (modified versions, maintained by volunteers from the community) have arisen. This is the most advanced of them, featuring a very long list of enhancements.

Virus alert?

Universal Extractor does not contain any malware. Some anti-virus programs occasionally misdetect files inside UniExtract's program directory. You can be sure that this is a so-called false positive, an error - if you downloaded UniExtract from the official source at https://github.com/Bioruebe/UniExtract2. A more detailed explanation can be found here. If you encounter a false positive, please report it here.

'Windows protected your PC'?

Modern versions of Windows have a feature called SmartScreen, which warns about unknown files. This means software without a big company behind it and/or a huge userbase produces a warning. Don't panic! Mostly this happens after a new version of UniExtract has been released. After enough users updated their installation, the warning might vanish, because it now has reputation. If you see a SmartScreen warning, you can safely click 'More info', then 'Run anyway'.

System requirements

In short: Windows XP or newer. However, outdated version of Windows only have limited support:

• Windows 7: sending feedback requires you to follow this guide by Microsoft, otherwise it will fail
• Windows XP: any online functionality, such as the updater or the feedback dialog, is disabled for security reasons. Also some extractors might not work.

(Online functionality for these systems might be restored in a future version of Universal Extractor.)

Updating

Universal Extractor 2 comes with a built-in updater. You will receive a notification when a new version is released. Alternatively, you can search for updates manually from the Help menu.

At the moment, UniExtract is still in beta and updates are rare. If you want to keep up-to-date with the development, you can opt-in to more frequent updates.

Do not replace any files in UniExtract's program directory yourself. This will break things! More details can be found here.

...can be found on the Releases page. However, this is for historical reasons ony. Please consider using the newest version instead.

Uninstalling

• If you enabled context menu entries, open Universal Extractor and select Edit > Context Menu Entries. Uncheck both enabled checkboxes and click OK.
• If you saved the program to a directory without write access (e.g. C:\Program Files) and want to remove all settings, remove the directory %APPDATA%\Bioruebe\UniExtract. Simply open the file explorer and enter %APPDATA%\Bioruebe into the path input, then delete the directory UniExtract.
• Finally, delete the program directory.

FAQ

Is there a portable version?

Universal Extractor itself is completely portable, with some exceptions:

• Enabling context menu entries will create registry entries
• To extract a wide variety of file types more than 50 different extractors are used. Some of them might leave traces on the system. For the most common archives and installers extraction can be considered portable, for others probably not.
• Storing Universal Extractor in a directory without write access (e.g. C:\Program Files) enables multi-user mode. This results in configuration files being stored in the %APPDATA% directory (C:\Users\YourUsername\AppData\Roaming\Bioruebe\UniExtract). See issue #20 for more information.

Why are there many different versions/modifications/repacks of Universal Extractor?

When the original developer of UniExtract stopped working on it, many people from around the world continued to update and improve the program. Some 'only' updated the tools Universal Extractor uses, others added great features. As a result all versions differ in terms of supported archives and features added.

This version is the only 'real' open-source one, with a central repository on Github everyone can contribute to. Over the years I fulfilled many user requests, added support for files the community wanted to decompress and implemented a lot of convenience functions. Many volunteers help translating UniExtract, finding bugs, discussing improvements and respond to other user's questions.

However, Universal Extractor 2 may fail to unpack files, which other versions of this tool can extract. If you really need to access the contents of an archive, you may have success with one of the other UniExtracts. Alternatively, you can also ask for support here. It might take a while until I can answer, though.

Can UniExtract (re)compress files?

No. This tool was designed as an extraction utility. A counterpart ("UniArchive") is out of scope - at least for me. (Read about the reasons here.) Feel free to create it!

Nightly Builds

You can opt-in to receive the most current development build of Universal Extractor 2. Simply open the preferences dialog (from 'Edit' menu) and check Install beta updates. The next time you search for updates, you will receive the development build instead of the release version. After disabling the option again you can go back to the latest stable version by simply updating.

Reporting bugs

Did you encounter a problem with UniExtract? Please report what went wrong to us. There are differnet ways to do so:

• If you have a Github account, you can open an issue. This is the prefered way for feature requests, suggestions and general technical problems.
• From within Universal Extractor: select 'Give feedback' from the 'Help' menu. This is the prefered way to submit failed extractons. If UniExtract was not successful, it will automatically ask you to send feedback (can be disabled from the options). This type of feedback includes a log with several debug information, which could help fixing the problem.
• Direct contact via email. This can be used if you do not have an account at Github. Many users, who created translations for UniExtract, like to send updated files per email. (Others open pull requests instead.)

Building from Source

1. Download and install AutoIt
2. Download and install SciTE (Optional)
   • Running UniExtract through SciTE has the additional benefit of real-time logging in the built-in console.
3. Clone this repository or download a snapshot and unpack into a folder of your likings
4. Open UniExtract.au3 in SciTE and hit F5 to run in debug mode; F7 to build an executable file or run UniExtract.au3 through Aut2Exe (look here for more information about Aut2Exe)
5. Download the necessary program files, which are not part of the source package
   1. Run the program
   2. UniExtract will display a message that the program files are incomplete. Select No.
   3. Go to Edit/Preferences and check Install beta updates. An update notification should appear. Otherwise, choose Help/Check for Updates. Select Yes.
6. In case the main executable gets overwritten, rebuild it as explained in step 4.

Contributions

Any contribution in form of ideas, bug reports, code commits, documentation improvements, etc. is welcome. Help is currently needed in updating the translations for many languages. If you are able to translate into another language, take a look at the corresponding issue (#2) or open the language file in the /lang subdirectory and check for empty strings. English and German language are always up-to-date and can be used as a reference.

Feel free to submit bug reports or feature requests using the issues tab or the built-in feedback window in Universal Extractor, accessible via the 'Help' menu. Refer to Github's issue page for planned features and problems to be fixed in future versions. The file todo.txt is a leftover from the original Universal Extractor and only used for personal development thoughts and notes.

Universal Extractor is licensed under GPLv2. See LICENSE for the full legal text. Code (functions, UDFs, etc.) written from scratch by me (which are not under copyleft) can also be used in your own projects under the terms of a BSD 3-clause license.

Universal Extractor uses TrIDLib by Marco Pontello, several 7zip plugins by Dec Software and many other great tools and libraries to support as many file formats as possible. Please consider supporting the authors of the software mentioned here.

Please note that Universal Extractor includes third-party software, which uses different licenses than the main program. Specifically, some extractors do not allow commercial use. If you intend to use the software for commercial purposes, please check the individual license files in the /docs subdirectory and the helper binary info file first. Feel free to delete files, whose license does not fit your use case, from the /bin subdirectory.

Wix installers support

Sample.

This is pretty easy once you have their dark.exe decompiler then.

Though, it strangely miss some files you can instead see by running the installer with -layout argument.
Also looking forward to wixtoolset/issues#3659

EDIT: after having noticed a similar behavior with this, I guess "dotNetFx40_Full_setup" is a dependence of the installer itself, rather than of the program. So in this sense.. it all depends on what we establish the purpose of the program should be.

"Context Menu Entries" window doesn't detect Windows Server 2016 for cascading menus

I'm running 2.0 beta 4 on Server 2016 and tried to get cascading menus working but it is greyed out. The tooltip says you need Windows 7 or higher. This might be the same on Windows 10 as well.

Doesn't extract msi installer of PDF-Xchange Editor properly

Hi!

I've been using the Gora update of uniextract (with the unpacker suggested, by default: JSWare extraction) to extract those files. And it worked fine. It also works with the original if I use the option MsiX unpacker. But with UE2 I only got cab files and such useless things, not the program files.

Curiously meanwhile testing with the same file the program started failing outright and not extracting anything. Weird...

Don't include complied executables

This is bad practice and makes the repository quite large. Compiled executable should be for releases only.

By the way I am an official AutoIt developer, so applaud that you're continuing with this project. I also see you took inspiration from quite a few of my ideas

[Low Priority] Feature request: Multi-MSI file extraction

I had an idea for an additional time-saver. Use or discard as you feel.

Background: Since different MSI files work with different options, going through every test saves time. This is a compliment/alternative to the additional button feature request.

Current behavior

Requested behavior

An additional button allowing the test all 3 options at sequentially to unique folders (plus a checkbox for the 4th option which -- as the current warning screen notes -- may be a security risk).

For example

1. Use Universal Extractor 2 on the file test.msi
2. Prompt for the current window but with an additional button at the bottom "Test All"
3. Another window appears with a brief explanation on what this means (the "background" bit up that the top)
4. An unchecked box available for the 4th option (which may be a security risk)
5. Once the user selects OK, each process is run in folders:

\1 - test.msi
\2 - test.msi
\3 - test.msi
\4 - test.msi\ (if box was checked)

Note: I can mock something up if this is unclear.

Tries to open an .MSI installer file as video

Setup: Win7x64
Steps:

1. Download OpenShot http://releases.openshot.org/windows/OpenShot-2.0.7.msi
2. Open with Uniextract2

Defect: Get error message confusing it with video file (clicked “no”, process closes)

Attempted workarounds: In preferences, uncheck “Extract Video tracks” and re-run process (no change). This process runs fine with the old "legroom" UniExtract version.

Language file updates

Universal Extractor 2 brings many additions and changes, thus most translations are not up-to-date anymore. It would be great, if some of you could help translating UniExtract into your mother tongue.

Getting started is easy: simply open the language file you want to improve (inside the lang sub-directory) with a plain text editor. You can find detailed instructions at the beginning of the translation file.

When updating language files, please check my last comment in this issue for information about breaking changes.

[suggestion] handling MSI in the new "WiX" format (with example)

Classic MSI (cab-archive/self extracted exe) is already well supported.
But most of the new installers released by Microsoft _{(for example VS 2005 build-tools)}
are now in the new WiX format,
which is not compatible w/ msi2xml or MsiX - there is a new (and free) tool for it!

Standard MSI:
msiexec.exe /a archive.msi /qb /l log.txt TARGETDIR="C:...target-dir..."

For WiX - use wix-toolset's dark.exe:
dark.exe myinstaller.exe -x "C:...target-dir...".


WiX installers are always exe-files, with the same signature
as classic MSI installers (successfully identified even back in the uniextract-v1.6 days).

I think dark.exe will only support
extracting the new WiX format, so you may included
it as a fallback for "self-extracted MSI" files which fail to extract using older-methods.

[Low Priority] Feature request: MSI Admin Installer additional button

Requested behavior:

Add an additional button to this window "Back" so you can return to the previous 4 options. The workaround of course is click Cancel, re-run the program, add the MSI file, and select a different option. It's also possible to run four instances of the program.

Add option to import custom extractor binary

Hi, Developers.
Thanks for reviving the great Universal Extractor. I have a suggestion.

Can you add an option to import custom extractor binary which isn't in the current list by providing user an option to browse the extractorbinary, assign a command line argument for it, and asociating extension for it. It will be very useful if the archive is something rare and can only be opened by custom extractor.

Smart Install Maker 5.04 extractor

Hi,
in Your recent build 'Universal Extractor 2 v2.0.0 Beta 4' there is not the file 'sim_unpacker.exe' for extract from installers created with Smart Install Maker http://www.sminstall.com/ .
This unpacker is present inside build of Joo Seng (see this topic http://forum.portableappc.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=386&p=4877&hilit=gora#p4877 ).

bug: Certain executable filenames  block extraction

certain installers with complex filenames, containing certain symbols,
it refuses to extract, complaining about not more space
but after renaming installer and redo, it works

For some reason, every single time I extract a new file I have to enter the options and re-check this box. I'm on Windows 10, the latest stable version.

Archive in unicode folder gets deleted when space in Temp folder is too low

When an archive (e.g. ZIP) resides within a folder that has unicode characters in its name, extraction of the archive may fail and the archive might get deleted.

The following conditions have to be met:

1. The folder containing the archive must contain unicode characters (e.g. ø)
2. The free space in the Temp folder must be big enough for the archive itself
3. The free space in the Temp folder must be smaller than the archive and its content combined

Example:
D:\unicøde\archive.zip (3 GB)
C:\Temp (free space on C: 4 GB)

Under these conditions, UniExtract will copy the archive to the Temp folder, delete the original archive and attempt to extract the temporary archive inside the Temp folder. The extraction fails due to low space, and UniExtract quits with the following error:

AutoIt Error - Line 24439 (File "D:\UniExtract\UniExtract.exe"): Error: Incorrect number of parameters in function call.

The temporary archive will, of course, not be deleted from the Temp folder after UniExtract crashes.

PS: May I ask why the original archive is deleted after it was copied to the Temp folder? This seems to be highly dangerous in case of an error.

• Thank you for maintaining and updating this project. I loved UniExtract but nowadays Inno setups cannot be extracted anymore. First try and the Beta 4 worked very well!

• Found something: setting window 'always in foreground' (have German language, therefore not exact title) is not persistent to uniextract.ini. Found the option in uniextract.ini. Changed setting to '1' - working.

Older NSIS installers not supported

The file manifest says "v2.0b2" (which means 2003 I guess).
Nsidis works nicely with it though. MFW that was InstallExplorer on the other hand.

So.. I wonder in which cases 7-zip would still be preferable then.

unrpa 1.4.2 out - fixed all my problems

I had been having 100% failure rate with unrpa. I rebuilt 1.4.1 and placed in /bin/unrpa/ and it still failed. now that this new version 1.4.2 is out, I built with python 2.7.13 and replaced the files in /bin/unrpa and it works again! Maybe this can save you some time, thought I figure you'll probably want to build it yourself

Allow resizing program window

The window can sometimes be too small to display whole file/directory paths; being able to resize it would help with this problem.

UniExtractUpdater can't detect last version of FFmpeg

I always installs last build of FFmpeg (from Zeranoe). My update BATch file for FFmpeg:

[Minor] Plugins menu error message

I got some odd results from going through the program in (what I expect) is a fairly common operation.

Setup: Win7x86
Steps: From the menu, Help -> Plugins. Click Finish.

Defect:

QuickBMS.EXE program not closing

Setup: Win7x64

Steps:

Additional notes: I found this program still running the next day at 20% CPU utilization. Only noticed it when running a another CPU-intesive operation.

DCGA Plugin

Plugin for decompression of DGCA archives seems to copy to /bin/ with no problem, but it doesn't detect the correct installation and the 'Download' doesn't change to 'Installed', likewise the 'Select File' doesn't change to 'Finished'

Improvements to ffmpeg installation

• The program should check whether it has permissions to write in its own folder (in my case, it hadn't)
• Possibly ask to be launched as administrator if it hasn't
• After a successful download, it should automatically proceed to next step.
• "Next" button would be clearer if stating "Skip"

Parse NSIS installers to fix folder names

A sample installer, the Unity Standard Assets installer, exports to a specific folder. It would be helpful if the generated NSIS script was parsed, and extracted folders were renamed accordingly.

Which makes me wonder why it's trying to use Java.

Note: I actually have Java installed, but it's not in the system PATH. It's possible this is confusing to the UniExtract module detector. (update: This doesn't seem to be the problem)

Minor tweak: The error message also has no spacing around the module name, which makes it read poorly, but that should be a simple fix. (update: fixed by #25)

Plus, it's FOSS and even actively supported.

I dunno if then this couldn't supplant all the remainder alternatives.

Language file changes

The current language file system has some problems. Instead of using fixed-order %s placeholders unique-numbered %1, %2,..., %n variables should be used.
Additionally, %name is planned to be added, so many %s variables could be removed.

You can update innounp.exe from v43 to Version 0.45 ;-)

I was not sure if your version was portable or has an installation file so maybe in the new release you should make it clearer since the executable is the installer also .

Feature request: ability to easily copy-paste scan output

NOTE: This is very low priority as I'm anticipating the needs of others and don't know if this is an actual concern.

Current behavior

When running the program on a setup file with "Scan" selected, you can press Ctrl+C on the resulting window and then paste the text into another window but the text doesn't look anything like the formatting in the output window.

Requested behavior

Somehow simplify the process of saving that data, perhaps a "save as" button to dump to text file?

Happens with file "BiosEdit.exe" inside this.

Timeline: New release planned? When?

Reword it however you like, I'm just moving this to an own issue as in #70 @MelchiorGaspar told he didn't know where to put it. :)

So are there any further releases foreseeable?

During initial setup for 2.0.0 Beta 4 the request seems to have gone unanswered. Browsing to the URL provides a 404 page. Provided is a copy of the error dialog after failure
