Alternatively, it would be nice to avoid the chords, too. One solution described here is to use a "literal" l character, or SPC as proposed here.

l was just a random example so don't take it too seriously. You'll want to check the default does not conflict with anything major, and for that matter allow the user to remap the literal (and the meta!) key.

Space seems pretty nice, actually. I think that should be the default.

This patch implements the reversal, so now:

• xs → C-x C-s

and

• x s → C-x s

The meta and literal keys are now configurable.

I quite like the use of x s for C-x s, because there is a visual correspondance, and x s is easy to type.
