Inherit god-mode state when creating buffers?

Can you give some steps to reproduce? There are different options for activating god-mode, it's not clear from your message which one you are using.

I'm using this to activate god mode locally:

  (global-set-key (kbd "<escape>") 'god-local-mode)

I also set the cursor with the following (from the Readme)

  (defun my-update-cursor ()
    (setq cursor-type (if (or god-local-mode buffer-read-only)
                          'box
                        'bar)))

  (add-hook 'god-mode-enabled-hook 'my-update-cursor)
  (add-hook 'god-mode-disabled-hook 'my-update-cursor)

With god-mode activated in an org file, I go to a source block and type c '. The opened buffer (called "Org src myfile.org[ emacs-lisp ]") is not in god-mode yet the cursor is still a block.

Maybe part of the problem is that the cursor is a block by default, but newly created buffers are not in god-mode by default.

Yeah, that's an option:

(setq-default cursor-type 'bar)

Alternatively, if you want god-mode auto-activated in all buffers then you need to run M-x god-mode (preferably put this in your .emacs) to activate it. Maybe this is the step you're missing.

Another option is to bind <escape> to god-mode-all which will activate/deactivate in all buffers at once every time.
