review OTN dataset submissions 13 -30 Sept 2019

@rachaelgallagher @jmadin et al. I've added a use case for dataset registry review process
in our architecture document here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1O-B4fJ-60URy_NODngD3j5NtrFfkzj94zFYDZsd_l3U/edit#bookmark=id.1e47on72nbqp . I am hoping we can use these recent submission as a way to practice the process, perhaps first manually, then start automating parts when needed. I expect this to be clunky at first, perhaps using a little script to generate dataset .md files. Curious to hear your ideas.

Related to #37 .

## Collaboration statement
Most of my research is at the interface between macroecology, biogeography, conservation biology and global change biology. My research relies heavily on biodiversity and trait databases, and I produced one myself (TetraDENSITY) that collates population density estimates for terrestrial vertebrates worldwide.

Editors @open-traits-network/editors: please see https://github.com/open-traits-network/open-traits-network.github.io/tree/master/_members#readme for information on registration process.

Do we need a web app for adding registry datasets and members?

I am keen to make sure new members who are not skilled in Git can join the network and/or add their datasets to the registry easily. @jmadin, @bmaitner @jhpoelen discussed the creation of a simple web app for this on Skype last week with differing opinions. My vote is for an app with the same fields as we already ask for in the members.md and for a Registry app with the fields in issue #30 . What do others think?

## Collaboration statement

I am interested in temporal and spatial patterns of biodiversity change and its implications. I am particularly fascinated by the role of biodiversity in driving the capacity of ecosystems to resist and recover from global change drivers.

I can offer expertise in combining and cleaning data from disparate sources and am keen to get a regional working group for South America started.

## Collaboration statement
I play a leading role in two international networks with ties to plant traits: MIREN, the Mountain Invasion Research Network (www.mountaininvasions.org) and SoilTemp, a global database of soil temperature time series (soiltemp.weebly.com). I can thus contribute expertise on the broader biogeographical patterns in plant traits. My geographical focus lies on mountain environments, where I study how local climate and land use shape these plant traits.
Always looking for: in-situ measured soil temperatures linked to trait observations to feed in to the SoilTemp database.

Different file extensions on member images

Image files in images/map folder have a range of different file extensions - e.g., jpg, jpeg, JPG, and png. Maybe someone knows some clever code to deal with this for the _layouts/member.html file. Otherwise, I'm afraid we will need to standardize these.

add taxonomic expertise to profiles/maps

Following the suggestion of @jhpoelen , I'm opening a new issue to discuss the questions about adding taxonomic expertise to the profiles/maps raised by @iimog

"I really like the suggestion to filter the map by taxonomic expertise and I have an idea on how to implement it. But I think we need to discuss how we want to handle this information in general: does every member need to add a taxonomic expertise, do we restrict it to predefined values, can members be experts in multiple groups, etc. If we decide on exactly one group out of a predefined set for every member we could also use distinct pins with specific icons in addition to the filtering."

translate content to other languages

@RobSalGo has offered to translate our content to Spanish which would be excellent. @shandongfx are you at all interested in doing a mandarin translation for us? I am not sure how much work would be involved in this task though, so please advise if it's not easily feasible. Any other language suggestions?

Resources

Hi,

I just had a look at the website. In the resource section there are links to protocols and handbooks. The handbook for modular traits is linked twice. And it might be useful to use a more descriptive name. E.g. instead of plants -> leaf functional trait handbook, handbook for modular traits etc.

Best,
Aud

## Collaboration statement
I enjoy working on applied problems in plant conservation using spatial analyses and traits. My primary (soon to be) open trait dataset is AusTraits - a curated dataset on the traits of Australian plants. This resource was created with harmonisation pipeline created by my collaborator Daniel Falster.

I can offer expertise in workflows for cleaning occurrence data and combining with trait data. I am also happy to help connect people together around traits by running working groups, hosting visitors in my lab, organising symposia at conferences and maintaining our Open Traits website.

Mike is a coral ecologist based in Hawaii.

## Collaboration statement
I'm broadly interested in the diversity and biogeography of organisms (mostly corals) and how human activities are influencing ecosystem functions. My work so far has explored the global biogeography of coral trait space and used traits to test the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem function on coral reefs. In the future I hope to continue to use traits or trait space to gain a better understanding of the forces that drive individual, population, and ecosystem performance. I hope this work will utilise and supplement the OTN.

use something similar to this: https://www.de-rse.org/en/map.html which

including name, image, testimonial, ...

trait data registry review process

let's make it so people who add new datasets need to have a review process. In this way they will be introduced to members of the OTN.

first pass at architecture document

To help capture our ideas on how to improve the open traits network, we'd like to create an architecture document. This document is used to formulate imagined usage and discuss ways to support that usage. Used with next 1-5 years in mind, for short term planning and upcoming proposals.

Here's a starting point:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1O-B4fJ-60URy_NODngD3j5NtrFfkzj94zFYDZsd_l3U/edit?usp=sharing

For now the document can be edited freely, but we can restrict access when needed. I imagine we can switch from docs to wiki / markdown when the document is a little more mature.

## Collaboration statement
With team members in Phenoscape (Phenoscape.org) and many other collaborators in the biological and biomedical sciences, I am developing semantic methods to connect phenotypic trait data to other other data types and to use them to quickly and easy pull together trait data. We are excited about the potential of these methods and all of our resources, code, publications, etc. are openly available. A community that my colleagues and I developed through NSF funding, (2010-2017) called the 'Phenotype Ontology Research Coordination Network' (https://www.phenotypercn.org) grew to over 400 people interested in computing on traits. I will be recommending OpenTraits network to this group.

My Phenoscape colleagues and I can offer expertise in semantic markup for traits, help you develop a knowledgebase, and advise in the development of new semantic resources. I am also happy to help connect people together around phenotypes by communicating one-on-one, putting others in contact with the broader life sciences community, and participating in meetings, workshops and venues.
